Job Title: Cook

Job Summary:

At the direction of the Executive Director, Kitchen Manager and Director of Nursing, has total responsibility for the preparation of all meals to residents as well as employees of The Homestead. Responsible for keeping the kitchen neat, clean, orderly, and quiet.

Education, Training, & experience:

Minimum Education & Experience: High School graduate with at least two years cooking experience in an institutional/ homemaker setting or two years of cooking school training.

Uniform requirements:

Aprons provided. Clean pants, and a clean shirt. Shirts may be print or colored with no objectionable artwork or sayings. No sandals or open toed shoes allowed in the kitchen.

Jewelry must not interfere with cooking. Long hair must be pulled back and/or up.

Job Responsibilities:

Assure that all therapeutic diets, and nutritional standards are met and are consistent with assistant cook.

Prepare proper quantities of breakfast, dinner, and supper meals for residents and employees. Work with Assistant cook and Kitchen Manager to ensure timeliness of preparation and to be continually aware of adequate nutrition and visually pleasing presentation. (Generally, follow menu prepared)

Plan and prepare food items for residents on special diets and meet their special requirements and preferences.

Serve desserts and have ready on cart for waitress to take to dining room.

Keep a running grocery list for purchasing of food items. Record items removed from freezers. Report breakage, supplies and repairs needed to the Director.

Thoroughly wash, dry and shelve cooking dishes for breakfast meal and dinner as time allows. Cover, and date all food and put away after meals. Pull frozen meats or foods for the next day, or what has been asked of you.

Work with the Kitchen Manager/Assistant Cook to complete cleaning of the kitchen, refrigerators, and freezers. Refrigerators should be cleaned on Monday and Thursday, removing outdated or perished foods. Wipe down grates and bottom of refrigerator. Clean oven weekly.

Prepare supper meal that can be easily heated/served according to menu. Prepare any special meals required for supper (wrap in plastic and label with residents name)\> Make a list of supper requirements (main meal, condiments, specials, etc.)

Sweep and mop kitchen floor at the end of your shift.

Will keep the RN and Director closely informed as to the health, welfare, and psychosocial needs of the resident.

Will keep abreast of Community Care/ Assisted Living Home standards and ensure that The Homestead meets those standards of health requirements as required by The State of Vermont.

Must be sensitive to the needs of the elderly and work closely with the RN and Director to create, maintain and protect the private homelike atmosphere for residents while observing all HIPPA standards.
