Brief Summary of Work for this Position

The Assistant Director for Graduate Student Involvement facilitates involvement, engagement, and community development for roughly 3,500 graduate students at

UNCW, with more than 60% in fully online programs. This position utilizes engagement data, assessment of graduate student needs, literature focused on andragogical practices, and best practices in graduate student support to inform a cross-campus approach to increase graduate student sense of belonging. The Assistant Director collaborates with the Graduate School to ensure that graduate students' academic and affective needs are being addressed. The Assistant Director works with units across campus to host social events and programs, leadership development experiences, and involvement opportunities specifically for the

UNCW graduate student population. This position works closely with the Graduate School, and as coordinated through the Graduate School, with graduate program coordinators to support graduate student organizations in organizational development, program planning, and leadership development. The Assistant Director also recruits, hires, trains, and supervises one (1) Graduate Assistant. The position supports utilization of the online student organization management database (WaveLink) for graduate students and graduate student organizations, serving as a trainer and educator for WaveLink-related needs for faculty and staff that support graduate student life across campus. This position reports directly to the Associate Director of Student Involvement and receives guidance from the Associate Vice Chancellor/Dean of Students in developing this new Stud nt Affairs initiative.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

  • Master's Degree in Higher Education Administration, Student Personnel, or related field
  • Two years of related professional experience
  • Knowledge and experience in event planning and execution
  • Experience advising student organizations
  • Experience utilizing assessment data to inform programming and business practices
  • Experience supervising or advising undergraduate and/or graduate students

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • 3-5 years of professional experience
  • Experience with Engage (Anthology) or other student engagement and student organization management platforms
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills
  • Prior experience creating and managing budgets
  • Experience creating and delivering co-curricular activities for graduate student population

Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit

The Division of Student Affairs consists of 13 functional departments, each of which is responsible for providing a variety of student support, service, and educational programs which are accessible to all members of the university community. The staff members are dedicated individuals known for their passion and commitment to implementing programs and services that affect student development over the course of a lifetime. Student Affairs provides excellent delivery of student services that are responsive to student needs and promotes the quality of life and education both inside and outside the classroom. We build institutional traditions and lifelong affiliations through creative programs, vibrant student organizations, and a living/learning environment built on core values and uncompromising principles. The Division is a leader and primary spokesperson for students.

The Campus Life department supports and gives direction to out-of-classroom learning for all students. Based on the philosophy that learning is not confined to the classroom but is constant and on-going, the mission of the department is to facilitate the educational process by providing experiences for student growth, and an arena for the development of cultural and social awareness with opportunities for leadership and engagement. This is accomplished through the administration of the Fisher Student Center, University Union, Burney Center and Warwick Center and their programs and services, by providing guidance and resources to student leaders and organizations and serving as the campus' central point of reference regarding leadership development, student activities and organizations, fraternity and sorority life, and student community engagement.

Campus Life also serves as the first point of contact for conference and event planning and assumes the space scheduling coordination function for all campus space (except for academic course scheduling) and works with campus space stewards in various departments throughout campus to ensure timely, coordinated service for all customers.
