The Constable Sergeant (Public Safety Supervisor) directly supervises and monitors the daily activities of the Public Safety Constables/Officers, Guest Services Staff, and Public Safety Dispatchers. This position reports directly to the Deputy Chief Constable (Public Safety Manager) and assists the Chief Constable (Director) and Deputy Chief in the management of the Public Safety Department, as assigned. This position works as a liaison between Public Safety Management and the line officers through the chain of command. As an experienced member of the Public Safety Team, the Sergeant is responsible for the safety and well-being of all Saint Francis visitors, patients, and staff. The Sergeant is a leader in the Public Safety Team and is responsible for assisting with leadership functions, including shift scheduling, training, hiring, discipline, and mentoring. Their role is to implement tactics within their shift to meet departmental and organizational objectives. The Sergeant is required to perform the functions of a Public Safety Constable/Officer as necessary. During times of staff shortage or difficult situations, overtime may be requested. This may include participation in an on-call rotation.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED required. Associate degree or higher preferred.

  • A valid motor vehicle license and a satisfactory driving record are required. Must be able to obtain an Emergency Vehicle Operator (EVO) license within one year of employment.

  • Must maintain weapon certifications in accordance with the Delaware State Police Professional Licensing Section and departmental standards.

  • CPR and AED certification required within six months of employment

  • Prior law enforcement experience is preferred. Must be able to meet the requirements of Constable (State of Delaware) in accordance with Title 24, Chapter 56 of the Delaware Code

  • Must have five years of experience in the field of law enforcement, security, and/or public service (Fire/EMS) or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Previous hospital experience preferred.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with demonstrated abilities in crisis management, including willingness and ability to perform alone or as a team member in the management of aggressive or violent behavior

  • Possess the ability to deal tactfully with colleagues, patients, and visitors.

  • Must obtain the IAHSS Basic, Advance, and Supervisor Certifications or higher (at the colleague's expense) within six months of employment and maintain the Supervisor Certification, at a minimum, for the duration of employment.
