UPMC is looking for a Surgical Instrument Repair Technician Apprentice to support our Williamsport location.

This full-time position works Monday- Friday, daylight hours. No weekends required.

Purpose:

The Surgical Instrument Repair Technician Apprentice (SIRTA) is a direct mentored trainee that performs repairs, inspections, and preventive maintenance on the multitude of handheld surgical instrument types and patterns used throughout the UPMC Health System and its affiliates as well as physician offices other institutions and other BioTronics Inc clients. This position works under the direct supervision of various Surgical Instrument Repair Technicians who will train the Surgical Instrument Repair Apprentice in the proper methods of inspection and repair of the multiple varieties types and patterns of handheld surgical instruments, and ancillary devices. Once sufficiently trained and validated on competency, the technician will be expected to accomplish multiple assigned tasks and goals.

Responsibilities:

  • Performs in accordance with system-wide competencies/behaviors.

  • Priority Class 'High' Equipment includes but is not limited to: ESU, ventricular assist devices, nursery incubators, pacemakers, thermocyclers, spectrophotometer, portable bypass system, injectors, muse system, defibrillator, ultrasound (diagnostic), x-ray imagers, x-ray portables, x-ray processors, x-ray tables, x-ray TV systems, Cranes-Buckys, scope sterilizers, washer decontaminators, cart washers, orthopedic specialty instruments, servers and gateways. Priority Class 'Specialty' Equipment: Nuclear camera, CT scanners, cath lab systems, dialysis, anesthesia, ventilators, sterilizers (steam and ETO), gas plasma sterilizers, tunnel washer, lasers, MRI, linear accelerator, perfusion equipment, surgical endoscope repair, system installations and relocations, diagnostic software support, clinical application and mapping systems.

  • Maintain records of all work activities in the Computerized Maintenance Management System (ITS) and Kronos system.

  • Provide availability to all UPMC sites in addition to primary learning site when needed.

  • Learn understand and implement specific regulatory requirements related to the instrument repair trade.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Priority Class 'Low' Equipment includes but is not limited to: Lab equipment, physical therapy equipment, saws, dental equipment, compressors, and general patient care equipment, arthroscopy instruments, standard scissors, forceps, retractors, elevators, ortho curettes, osteotomes, chisels, bone cutters, printer and PC peripherals.

  • Priority Class 'Medium' Equipment includes but is not limited to: Patient monitoring systems, video equipment, warmers (blood and fluid), scope washers, lab equipment (analyzers), oximeters, infusion devices, diagnostic test equipment (pulmonary), NIBP units, humidifiers, oxygen equipment (respiratory), nerve/muscle stimulator, Doppler, computer work stations, pumps, tourniquets, SCD, hypothermia, EKG machines, ultrasound (PT), OR tables, OR lights and sonics, rongeurs, needle holders, general imaging/radiology equipment.

  • Learn to perform routinely preventive maintenance, inspection and repair on surgical instrumentation to include Low to Medium basic instrumentation groups.

  • Required to be familiar with other specialized tooling positioning devices and jigs used in all surgical specialties.

  • Travel between UPMC sites, hospital affiliates, and institutions for services with BioTronics Inc is required.

  • Use of personal vehicle may be required.

  • Learn, understand and follow all repair and sharpening standards related to surgical instruments (ANSI Standards).

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent

  • Journeyman papers/Certificate of Completion in PA. (or other state) preferred

  • Dept. of Labor and Industry Apprenticeship as Machinist or Tool and Die Maker or equivalent military training and/or experience is preferred but not mandatory.

  • Experienced Central Services (CS) or Surgical Processing Department (SPD)Technicians with good dexterity hand eye coordination, interested in learning repairs are preferred but not required.

  • Potential to develop proficiency in fabrication and modification of small parts necessary for specialized repairs.

  • Basic computer skills as required to operate a Computerized Maintenance Management System and common office software including but not limited to MS Office.

  • May in the course of duties be in rooms where medications are stored.

  • No contact with the medication is allowed. Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • Act 33 Child Clearance

  • Act 34 Criminal Clearance

  • Act 73 FBI
