Description of Work

This position is located in NCDOT Division 11 and will serve as a Transportation Supervisor II in the Wilkes County Maintenance Unit. Employee will be responsible for the planning, organization, and supervision of all work activities and materials and equipment needs for one or more crews in the most complex transportation maintenance work covering the maintenance and repair of State maintained roads. Work will include, but is not limited to, working in close proximity of high volumes of traffic and heavy construction equipment; ability to climb, bend, and traverse steep and uneven terrain; ability to work in extreme temperature conditions; ability to work with power tools to perform pavement patching, drainage maintenance, shoulder repair, paved and unpaved roadway maintenance, vegetation management, snow and ice removal, and emergency response to roadway maintenance needs. Employee will be responsible for maintaining work records, time sheets, job reports, and inventory records, planning work operations and adjusting work assignments, training employees on-the-job, conducting performance reviews, assisting with interviewing, and recommending new staff. Employee will be responsible for ensuring equipment is maintained and serviced as required and must routinely determine materials, techniques, and tools to accomplish standard and non-standard work assignments, and complex work assignments. Other responsibilities include budgeting, documenting expenditures for multiple crews, using the Maintenance Management System (MMS) to assign task numbers and to compare actual cost with established guidelines, and aid Engineer by analyzing expenditures and altering work crew assignment to maintain fiscal responsibilities. Employee must utilize NCDOT required Proper Protective Equipment, following OSHR and NCDOT Safety Policy and Procedure Manual.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

Applicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following:

  • Working knowledge of standard maintenance procedures.

  • Experience in roadway maintenance and repair in one of the following: shoulder and ditch maintenance, pipe installation, asphalt patching, snow and ice removal, crack sealing, full depth patching or pothole patching.

  • Experience supervising subordinates and directing the daily activities of a work crew.

  • Experience in Advanced Work Zone Safety and NCDOT Workplace Safety Policy and Practices.

  • Experience in planning and organizing work

Additional Expectations:

Must be able to work safely in an outside environment with exposure to hazards present on construction sites including traffic, heights, and traversing rough, steep, and uneven terrain. Employee in this position will be subject to high volumes of traffic and extreme temperatures/weather conditions. Must be able to perform moderate physical activity such as walking, climbing, kneeling, and standing. Work includes emergency situations, nights, and weekends. Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle. Safety toe shoes are required.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school or General Educational Development diploma and seven years of directly related experience; or an equivalent combination of training and directly related experience. Experience must be related to functional area of the work that the position will supervise.
