This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Domestic Defense Industrial Base (DIB) & Major Range & Test Facilities Base (MRTFB) in DoD to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service. About the Position: This position is located in Logistics Readiness Center at WSMR, NM. Responsibilities Prepare and construct containers with complex bracing to ship or store assemblies for items such as radar antennas, electronic integrated systems, sensitive optical tracking equipment, special purpose computer systems, and other similar items. Use Special Packing Instructions (SPI), blueprints, and item specification to develop bracing points based on weight of the item or equipment, gravity center, and method of shipment to prevent shifting or damage in transit or storage Select proper containers and type of cushioning material required for items to be packed. Operate forklift trucks capable of lifting up to 10,000 to 15,000 pounds, respectively, higher than 168 inches to move materials inside or outside of buildings and warehouses and over level surfaces. Plans and constructs custom shipping and storage containers for items of irregular size and shape, which typically involve complex construction problems caused by size, sensitivity, and security requirements. Weighs containers and crates using platform scales. Select proper containers and type of cushioning material required for items to be packed. Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a WOOD WORKER without more than normal supervision. These duties or tasks include constructing and/or repairing wood boxes, crates, or pallets. Interpreting drawings, sketches, blueprints, and/or written instructions to complete a project. Operating hand and power tools such as hand and power saws, nail guns, hammers, banding equipment, jacks, or levers. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted. PHYSICAL EFFORT Work involves frequent standing, bending, stooping, and working in cramped areas or platforms. Lifts or carries items weighing up to 70 pounds and heavier items require assistance. Physical movement of hands, arms, and legs is used when operating vehicle controls while driving, turning, lifting, backing, and stopping vehicles. WORKING CONDITIONS Work is performed in areas that are uncomfortable, warm, cool, drafty, and hot or cold when working outside. The employee is exposed to loud noises from power saws, lung irritation from sawdust, and subject to cuts, bruises, or broken bones. Drives vehicles in all types of weather and is, therefore, subject to possible serious accidents. Is required to obtain/maintain a valid driver's license. May require the use of protective clothing and equipment as authorized by the installation Safety Office. May be subject to emergency call-back work after normal duty hours and on weekends and scheduled overtime requirements which are compensated by overtime payments. Successful performance of the work requires attendance at any number of ammunition/explosives training courses. The incumbent must obtain and possess a Level I certification relative to ammunition/explosives handling, storage, and transport. Certification training must be successfully completed as scheduled by the appropriate management official.
