The Solution Design Team seeks a collaborative, innovative and customer-oriented engineering manager to help design and scale our next generation robotic solutions. A successful candidate will have a passion for creating high-performance physical systems, a strong technical problem-solving ability, excellent project management skills, the ability to effectively communicate with and influence decision-makers at all levels, and an internal motivation to deliver results in a fast-paced and often ambiguous environment. Amazon Robotics culture encourages innovation and expects engineers and managers alike to take a high level of ownership in solving complex problems.

This role requires you to scope and deliver large projects, build a network of relationships, manage a team of design engineers, and communicate to senior management on status, risks, process, and product changes. Cross-team coordination, project management and executive presentation skills are essential. Furthermore, the ability to grasp multi-dimensional design factors to develop innovative solutions that are globally applicable is of utmost importance. This role is located in North Reading or Westborough, MA.

Key job responsibilities

• The Solution Design Manager provides business, analytical and technical design leadership for a multi-disciplinary team to design and deploy the next generation of robotic solutions

• Manage the design life cycle process and resource planning

• Hire and Develops the Best

• Dive deep and be hands on to drive innovative and incremental improvements to robotic solutions using cutting edge technology, robotics, and data analytics to meet the product flow requirements based on Amazon design principles. Lead technical design projects in concert with your team.

• Inspire strategic design decisions by identifying and analyzing key operational and financial metrics. Develop models as required to solve complex problems and advocate for your team’s conclusions.

• Manage relationships with key global leaders, partners and customers to effectively influence, negotiate, and collaborate on systems design and integration all the way through building construction and startup.

• Coordinate cross-functionally with program teams to develop next gen product features that further optimize the performance of our systems

We are open to hiring candidates to work out of one of the following locations:

North Reading, MA, USA | Westborough, MA, USA

Basic Qualifications

• Minimum of 7 years of experience with a Master’s Degree in engineering, operations, or a related field; Advanced degree preferred. (Type and number of degrees could reduce the years of experience required.) Or 2 years of Amazon experience.

• Minimum of 3 years of experience as a people manager of industrial engineers, process engineers, systems engineers, manufacturing engineers, or related occupations as direct reports.

• Mastery of fundamentals of Industrial Engineering, including probability and statistics, SPC, time studies, business case analysis, ergonomic/safety/human factors analysis. Experience with floorplan and process design based on Lean Principles.

• Demonstrated project management experience with multiple projects.

• Experience using MS Excel, SmartSheet, AutoCAD, Revit and commercial off the shelf data manipulation technologies such as Tableau, SQL, etc.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience working with the designs of complex automated material handling equipment and systems including robotics and high-speed manufacturing.

• Applies expert business knowledge and strong technical insight to address customer challenges. Able to anticipate and develop business priorities for future action. Able to assess broader and deeper impact of decisions on the business.

• Experience working with Architects, General Contractors, and Engineers on greenfield and brownfield construction projects to integrate life safety, regulatory, structural, mechanical, electrical, data, and plumbing requirements into the full project lifecycle.
