U.S. Military Academy Candidate Management Liaison in West Point, New York

Summary About the Position: The U.S. Military Academy, West Point, NY is an academic institution located in the Hudson River Valley, 50 miles from New York City. The historic site is the oldest continuously occupied military post in America. West Point is a self contained city with housing, a Department of Public Works, libraries, hospital, fire department, chapels, and restaurants. Employees have access to Eisenhower Hall Theater, Hudson Valley's performing arts center, and recreational facilities. Responsibilities Administer the U.S. Military Academy (USMA) Nomination Program and Nomination Assistance Program. Maintain direct communication with external agencies and nominating sources on matters concerning USMA admissions, status of nominations, appointments, separation of cadets, admission procedures, and the Academy Candidate program. Plan, direct, and has final approval authority for the release of information to Members of Congress and other nomination sources concerning nomination vacancies for each entering class. Provide special letters to Congressmen and Congressmen-elect containing Academy appointment rights and privileges and status information on cadets and vacancies of predecessor. Maintain liaison with officials in Department of Defense Medical Examination Review Board and the USMA Commandant's office concerning applicants, nominations, separations, candidate evaluations and medical criteria. Serve as the Academy Staff project officer for the Congressional Staff Visits to the USMA. Establish operating procedures and monitor progress to ensure that maximum effectiveness is achieved within applicable statutes and policies. Review congressional nomination assistance requirements for students identified by USMA as gifted scholars, leaders, athletes, minorities, and/or women who have indicated interest in attending USMA but lack the appropriate nomination. Answer telephonic and verbal questions and represent the section at meetings and conferences as required. Perform administrative and clerical duties in support of the recruited athlete admissions program. Answer inquiries from candidates, parents, and Members of Congress offices concerning status, admission requirements, and procedures. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes 1) performing administrative duties in support of an organization's nomination and/or nomination assistance program; 2) providing information to prospective candidates concerning their application and nomination status; 3) preparing admission files for committee review; and 4) drafting a wide variety of correspondence. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06). Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted. You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas: Administration and Management Clerical Oral Communication Written Communication Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-06). Education Additional Information Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Registration. You will be required to provide proof of U.S. Citizenship. One year trial/probationary period may be required. Direct deposit of pay is required. This position is eligible for situational telework only, including emergency and OPM prescribed "unscheduled telework". Situational telework is approved on a case-by-case basis, where the hours worked were not part of a previously approved, ongoing, and regular telework schedule. Situational telework is sometimes also referred to as episodic, intermittent, unscheduled, or ad-hoc telework.
