West Haven City Part Time Parks Maintenance Operator I in WEST HAVEN, Utah

Job Summary

Performs various entry-level skilled duties related to the construction, installation, maintenance, upkeep, and repair of city buildings, recreation facilities, parks, and grounds. 

 

Supervision

Received:            Works under the direct supervision of the Parks Operator III and general supervision Parks and Recreation Director.

Exercised:           None.

 

Essential Functions

·         Performs general building maintenance; constructs and maintains boweries, small buildings, and storage facilities; assures proper operation of lighting fixtures, doors, windows, and plumbing; may assist in framing, painting, roofing, or other skilled construction and maintenance activities related to carpentry, plumbing, and electrical; performs concrete and masonry work.

·         Assures proper installation and maintenance of playground equipment; performs needed repairs promptly.

·         Assists in the layout and installation of sprinkler systems; installs, tests, and maintains systems utilizing low-voltage, hydraulic, or other operating features; repairs sprinkler heads and inspects the sprinkling system to assure operation.

·         Identifies the need to initiate various aspects of spraying programs related to the prevention or eradication of pests, fungi, and insects harmful to park plants, trees, and shrubs; selects appropriate chemicals and combinations to accomplish tasks; maintains records of spraying activities; assures chemicals are appropriately stored and used in conformity with city, state, or federal regulations; operates spraying equipment.

·         Operates lawn mowing equipment; performs routine repair and lubrication; mows and trim grass, bushes, shrubs, and plants; removes dead, diseased, or injured trees; stimulates healthy plant growth through custom pruning and cutting.

·         Operates tractors and implements as well as water trucks. Performs arena grooming and maintenance.

·         Performs general landscape and gardening activities, planting and transplanting trees, shrubs, bushes, grass, flowers, etc., to develop attractive parks and grounds.

·         Operates a variety of types of small and light equipment such as mowers, sod cutters, chain saws, pruning equipment, backhoe, loaders, trenchers, aeration tractors, and various hand tools; performs routine and regular mainte nance on equipment to assure efficiency and safety.

·         Performs seasonal duties such as winterizing sprinkler systems to prevent freezing, flushing watering systems in spring, and repairing other equipment and facilities.

·         May train other laborers using backhoes, loader tractors, gang lawnmowers, and landscape equipment.

·         Oversees general cleanup, maintenance, and repair of restrooms, pavilions, playgrounds, picnic tables, benches, bleachers, ball fields, and other facilities.

·         Performs digging of graves and burial at City Cemetery, including marking headstones and all other cemetery-related maintenance.

·         Snow removal and weed control of all city-owned trails and sidewalks.

·         Attendance is an essential function of this position.

·         Must be willing to work on a rotating on-call basis.

·         Performs related duties as required.

 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

 

Knowledge of:

·         Maintenance equipment such as backhoe, loader, dump truck, mowers, tractor, power overseeders, aerators, thatchers, welders, trimmers, etc.

·         Landscape and sprinkler system design and flow pumps.

·         Hazards and related safety precautions associated with equipment operations.

·         Herbicides, fungicides, insecticides, and pesticides, and proper application of the same; of turf and greens management.

·         Interpersonal communication skills.

 

Skills In:

·         The operation of various types of light equipment such as gang mowers, fro t-end loaders, tractors, backhoes, etc.

·         Basic mechanics, basic electrical and plumbing operations.

·         Basic carpentry and masonry.

 

Ability To:

·         Recognize and identify common weeds and pests.

·         Recognize and identify diseases common to turf and greenery.

·         Apply chemicals for the reduction and eradication of noxious weeds and insects.

·         Perform various semi-skilled and skilled functions related to building maintenance.

·         Develop and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, elected officials, local agencies, and the general public.

·         Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.

·         Tolerate weather extremes in the work environment.

·         Perform basic mathematical computations in reading and using various meters, gauges, and related devices. 

 

Education & Experience

·         Graduation from high school or GED; and

·         One (1) year of general work experience is preferable in a field related to the above duties.

Certifications & Licensures

·         Must possess a valid Utah driver's license.

·         Must obtain CDL class "B" with tanker endorsement.

·         Pesticide/Herbicide applicator license within six months of hire.

·         OSHA Safety Certificate.

 

Physical & Mental Demands

Tasks require a va riety of physical activities periodically involving muscular strain related to walking, standing, stooping, sitting, pulling, and reaching.  Essential functions require talking, hearing, and seeing.  Common eye, hand, and finger dexterity are required to perform essential functions. Daily local travel is necessary for job performance---ongoing exposure to changing weather conditions.

 

Must be able to lift 20-50 pounds continually and frequently lift/carry up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift/carry more than 100 pounds.  Crouching/kneeling, balancing, and bending/twisting may occur usually when performing essential duties.

 

Mental application utilizes memory for details, emotional stability, discriminating thinking, and creative problem-solving.

Special Requirements

·         A six-month introductory period is a prerequisite to this position.

·         Must have a valid Utah driver's license.

·         Satisfactory outcome of a pre-employment and ongoing drug screening is required.

·         Satisfactory outcome of a pre-employment physical is required.

·         Satisfactory outcome of a pre-employment criminal background check is required.

·         Irregular work schedule and may require extended hours, including evenings and weekends.

·         Work on a rotating on-call basis.
