DON GILL ELEMENTARY Custodian (full-time, 8 hrs./12 months) and has benefits.

Rate of pay: $14.150 per hour (after completion of 45-day probationary period at $10 per hour)

*JOB SUMMARY:            * Under supervision of the Facility Maintenance Specialist and/or Director of Buildings & Grounds, performs a wide variety of cleaning and custodial duties necessary to provide a clean, healthy and safe environment for students, staff, and the general public.  

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:                 

This job description in no way states or implies that the following duties represent all of the job responsibilities for this position.

  1. Performs routine and comprehensive custodial duties of assigned facilities.
  2. Dusts and mops floors surfaces, vacuums and spot cleans carpets, washes windows, removes trash, replaces light bulbs, cleans and disinfects restrooms, locker rooms, gymnasiums, offices, classrooms and other assigned areas.
  3. Trouble shoots, performs minor repairs (chairs, desks, tighten outlet covers, etc.)  and responds to emergency calls for custodial assistance.
  4. Implements setup and takedown for a wide variety of school and community events, and works with employees and the public in servicing those events.
  5. Operates power equipment such as auto floor scrubbers, carpet extractors, pressure washers, floor machines, snow blowers, and hand and power tools.
  6. Participates in the special cleaning processes implemented during the summer months, including stripping and refinishing wood and non wood floor surfaces, simple HVAC filter cleaning and replacement, locker room steam cleaning, and other tasks as assigned.
  7. Maintains an adequate inventory of cleaning chemicals and supplies, and submits timely requests for replacements, as well as stays current on the proper mixing (concentrates) and use of all cleaning supplies in the building.
  8. Maintains outdoor garbage cans as required, and periodically inspects the outside grounds, and removes litter to insure a safe and attractive property.
  9. Follows proper procedures for the storing and handling of pathological/infectious wastes.
  10. Unloads freight as required.
  11. Removes snow and ice from walkways and entrances, involving snow blowers, snow shoveling, and salt broadcasting.
  12. Contributes to a positive work environment by fostering goodwill among all occupants and guests of the building being serviced.
  13. Performs other duties assigned by the Supervisor.   

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Previous custodian experience preferred

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to operate all required custodial equipment
  • Willingness to work in any of the district buildings assigned
  • Ability to read and understand cleaning product instructions and warnings
  • Ability to work from ladders at heights up to 15 feet (primarily cleaning and light bulb replacement) 
  • Ability to handle and dispose of hazardous materials and blood borne pathogens with care
  • Must appropriately handle confidential information

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • May be exposed to hazardous materials and blood borne pathogens
  • Must be able to work in an environment with frequent interruptions
  • Must be cooperative, congenial, and service-oriented in difficult situations 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Ability to perform physical labor
  • Ability to reach above and below the waist, use fingers to pick, feel, and grasp objects, use both hands for repetitive motion, bend, twist, kneel, stoop, climb and crawl
  • Ability to lift and/or carry heavy items (up to 50 lbs. unassisted)
  • Routinely required to work under inclement weather conditions
  • Ability to stand or walk eighty percen (80%) of the workday
