Overview

The Vermont Department of Health is excited to hire a Public Health Analyst for the Vermont Cancer Registry (VCR) and the Comprehensive Cancer Control Program (CCC). The VCR, part of the Informatics Unit within the Division of Health Statistics and Informatics, collects data on all cancer diagnosed in Vermont. This data, combined with population level data sources, supports statewide and national efforts to reduce the burden of cancer on individuals, families, and communities. The Public Health Analyst conducts epidemiological surveillance of cancer among Vermonters. Analysis of registry and population level data is used to monitor cancer and cancer screening in Vermont to facilitate data driven decisions for cancer prevention and control.

This position sits within the Cancer Registry and will also support the work of the Health Promotion and Disease Prevention Analytic Team within the Research, Evaluation and Epidemiology Unit of the Division of Health Statistics and Informatics. The Analyst works collaboratively across teams including the Comprehensive Cancer Control Program and the Breast and Cervical Cancer Screening Program, as well as with other chronic disease analysts and community partners.

Responsibilities include selection and application of statistical and epidemiological methods and scientific assessment of data, performance measure monitoring, collaboration with program evaluation, report preparation and presentation of results. The position requires the knowledge of statistical software, analysis of data, assessment of data quality, data visualization and data dissemination.

This position is based in Waterbury, Vermont but is eligible for a hybrid work schedule, which can be discussed with the supervisor.

Responsibilities may include:

Assist with the collection of timely, accurate, and complete data on cancer diagnosed in Vermont and among Vermonters.\ Maintain high quality data for submission to the CDC and for analysis.\ Analyze cancer incidence, mortality, trends, prevalence, risk factors, screening, prevention and survival data.\ Research, review, and develop methods of analysis.\ Research risk factors, opportunities for early detection, and consistency with best practices.\ Disseminate data and research findings through publications, online visualizations, and presentations.\ Engage with stakeholders and be the spokesperson for cancer data quality and analysis\ Communicate complex data and analysis to a variety of audiences, including lay audience.\ Work with large and complex data sets (analysis, queries, reports and publications).\ Conduct data linkages and ad hoc analysis as requested by partners.\ Investigate community concerns.\ Provide analytic support for internal and external data requests.\ Collaborate with other VDH Programs and analysts as well as external partners.\ Geographic Information System (GIS) analysis.\ Write reports, summaries and briefing documents.\ Support annual grant writing and reporting.\ Assist with program evaluation and outcome measure development as needed.\ Perform additional tasks or other related duties as required.

Environmental Factors

Duties are performed primarily in a standard office setting. Meetings with data users and providers may require some travel, for which private means of transportation must be available. Some work outside of normal office hours may be required.
