Handling tax in such a large, sophisticated organization takes more than just a technical understanding of current tax practices. As a State Income Tax Manager, we'll look to you to apply your knowledge to a wide range of tax areas and processes, devising strategic outcomes to some very complex issues. The opportunity

The State Income Tax Manager will provide a variety of tax consulting, planning, and compliance services to a diverse range of clients operating in various sectors, Our Greater Washington tax practice is constantly evolving, and it's here you'll find everything you need to grow as we do. Your key responsibilities

The State Income Tax Manager will develop client relationships and oversee state-level tax projects, including compliance and related research. You will also be responsible for leading, developing and directing a team in managing state tax services for clients.

Skills and attributes for success

  • Monitoring and analyzing changes in state income tax laws and regulations and determine impact to clients.

  • Providing complex tax review, research, planning and consulting services to diverse clients, including federal and state tax regulations.

  • Leading or assisting with various tax planning, research, and special projects.

  • Preparing and reviewing quarterly and annual state income tax provisions.

  • Modeling various state income tax benefits and consequences using Microsoft Excel, PowerBI or Alteryx.

  • Managing and executing state income tax compliance responsibilities.

  • Writing tax technical memos to succinctly articulate issues, conclusions, and the analysis with respect to various state tax issues.

  • Developing and working with staff and seniors to create a team environment.

To qualify for the role, you must have

  • A bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business or a related discipline.

  • High level of proficiency in state income tax code, regulations and procedures.

  • A proven record of excellence in a professional services or tax organization.

  • Technical writing and research experience in a tax context.

  • The ability to analyze client data, technical guidance, and make recommendations to engagement teams.

  • The ability to prioritize when working on multiple complex projects.

  • Strong influencing skills, and the confidence to question existing processes.

  • Willingness to travel as needed, and working in a balanced hybrid environment.

You'll also have

  • An achieved CPA qualification, certification as a member of the Institute for Professionals in Taxation or be a member of a state bar.

What we offer

We offer a comprehensive compensation and benefits package where you’ll be rewarded based on your performance and recognized for the value you bring to the business. The salary range for this job in most geographic locations in the US is $94,600 to $173,400. The salary range for New York City Metro Area, Washington State and California (excluding Sacramento) is $113,500 to $197,000. Individual salaries within those ranges are determined through a wide variety of factors including but not limited to education, experience, knowledge, skills and geography. In addition, our Total Rewards package includes medical and dental coverage, pension and 401(k) plans, and a wide range of paid time off options. Under our flexible vacation policy, you’ll decide how much vacation time you need based on your own personal circumstances. You’ll also be granted time off for designated EY Paid Holidays, Winter/Summer breaks, Personal/Family Care, and other leaves of absence when needed to support your physical, financial, and emotional well-being.
