KBR is seeking a Mechanical Technician to provide technical support in the development, mechanical assembly, testing, installation, and documentation of NASA Goddard Space Flight Center’s (GSFC) next generation satellite laser ranging system, the Space Geodesy Satellite Laser Ranging (SGSLR) system.

The successful candidate may be tasked with any of the following:

  • Reads blueprints, wiring diagrams, schematics, and engineering instructions for assembling equipment and hardware. In the event engineering instructions are not available, candidate must possess the mechanical skills to complete the task.

  • Perform population of printed circuit boards, custom cable fabrication, and chassis layout and assembly.

  • Assists in the fabrication, assembly, integration, and testing of SGSLR hardware and subsystems.

  • Support other technicians and engineers in assembly, testing, and troubleshooting.

  • Perform rework/repairs of product/performance non-conformities.

  • Generate and place purchase requests for project materials needed and perform incoming inspection on items received.

  • Maintain parts lists for subsystems tasked to support.

  • Travel to SGSLR sites in support of installation and troubleshooting.

  • Under limited supervision - installs, builds, tests, troubleshoots, repairs, and modifies components, parts, equipment, and systems for the SGSLR program. Receives instructions, equipment requirements, and advice from supervisor or engineers as needed. Performs assignments that are not completely standardized or prescribed. Performs recurring work independently and work is reviewed for technical adequacy or conformity with instructions.

    Required Skills/Training:

  • A high level of manual dexterity, including the ability to handle and control small parts during critical assembly is required.

  • Must retain demonstrated ability to perform to high-quality workmanship standards and display attention to detail in following procedures.

  • Must retain ability to read, interpret, and analyze technical drawings, diagrams, and technical publications.

  • Background in system testing and troubleshooting is important.

  • Ability to identify components or materials required for a given task and develop a part’s list.

  • The successful candidate must have a solid history of functioning in a team environment, being a self-starter, working independently with limited instruction, and meeting critical technical and schedule demands. This will require the successful candidate to have excellent interpersonal, communication and organizational skills and to have the ability to work in a fast-paced environment with attention to detail.

  • Knowledge in standard computer tools and applications is required.

    Required Education/Experience:

High school diploma and at least ten years of relevant experience.

Desired Education, Experience, Skills or Training:

  • Education or training in mechanical and electrical systems and engineering is beneficial to this position.

  • A college degree or post-secondary school training from a military or vocational education program is highly desired.

  • Experience with field work including the installation of components.

  • Experience in a shop environment, fabricating mechanical parts using standard shop equipment, is a plus.

  • Familiarity with working on ladders/heights.

  • Ability to lift 50 lbs.

Travel: This position will involve both domestic and international travel for preparation and installation of SLR systems. Ability to obtain and keep a passport is required along with other travel requirements relevant to US regulations and regulations of countries to be entered for work.
