City of Warwick Automotive Mechanic Lead Person in Warwick, Rhode Island

Performs skilled work at the journeyman level necessary to maintain, repair and perform inspections on the Citys fleet of vehicles including commercial vehicles, fire and rescue apparatus and other gas or diesel powered equipment. Leads, trains and guides colleagues in the Automotive Division. Duties include: ? Examines, operates and trouble shoots vehicles to determine the nature and extent of malfunctions, damage or service needs. ? Removes, disassembles and inspects units such as engines, transmissions, and differentials to identify damaged or worn parts, and fixes and replaces as necessary to ensure they operate properly and safely. ? Performs computer diagnostics with both original equipment manufacturers and aftermarket diagnostic equipment. ? Diagnoses and repairs specialized onboard mechanicals such as ABS and fuel injection systems. ? Diagnoses and repairs diesel exhaust after-treatment systems. ? Inspects and repairs air and hydraulic brakes, and the full range of hydraulic systems found on commercial vehicles. ? Examine vehicles and work orders to determine need for parts/supplies necessary to effect repairs. ? Guides and instructs staff on proper methods and techniques and may inspect work upon completion if a job is particularly specialized or complex. ? Keeps shop records and hands out assignments based on priority and staff competencies. ? Consults with mechanics to troubleshoot repairs. ? Performs Rhode Island safety and emissions inspections. ? Installs and repairs aftermarket radios, strobe and emergency lights. ? Diagnoses/repairs automotive A/C systems with 609 or later certification and perform other tasks assigned. Education and Experience: Must be a high school graduate or completed vocational or trade school in the field of automotive repair and maintenance with 6 to 8 years related experience and or training; supplement with experience that may have been gained through employment as an automotive and truck mechanic doing diversified repair and maintenance work. Experience in heavy duty mechanics, diesel repair and hydraulics is required or any equivalent combination of education and experience. Special Note: Must possess and maintain a valid, state issued drivers license as a condition of employment. Within one (1) year of appointment, must acquire and maintain as a condition of continued employment: a state issued commercial drivers license (CDL) with airbrake endorsement; and a State of RI inspection license and EPA 609 refrigerant certification.
