Fresenius Medical Care North America Director, Sustainability (REMOTE) in Waltham, Massachusetts

PURPOSE AND SCOPE:

The director of sustainability operations is responsible for the planning and execution of a comprehensive sustainability program inside of the Care Delivery operations organization that aligns with global material topics, stated KPIs and goals, and engages staff at all levels. This multifaceted role helps position FME as a leader with the goal of upholding standards and best practices. A key responsibility is promoting and driving collaboration on sustainability efforts across various business and functional groups to ensure the successful implementation of strategies. The director is responsible for the organizing, implementation, promotion, and monitoring of sustainability strategies and goals across all countries inside of Care Delivery. The director deploys sustainability actions that lead to the reduction of material consumption and promote long-term sustainability. The director acts in accordance with policies and procedures and exemplifies the mission, vision, and values of FME.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Analyze and assess current operating procedures, materials, and methods, anticipate and implement changes or modifications based on sustainability goals

  • Direct the development and management of corporate sustainability for the global Care Delivery organization - encompassing people, planet, and profit, while emphasizing the interconnectedness of human health to a healthy planet

  • Drive the agenda for an internal executive sustainability steering committee at the business level that will oversee and monitor progress

  • Work collaboratively to develop a vision, strategies, and SMART goals to integrate sustainability cross-functionally across the enterprise

  • Collaborate with the company’s internal groups (e.g., operations, clinical services, occupational health and safety, human rights, procurement, marketing/communications, and medical office) for the development and implementation of initiatives in support of the sustainability strategy

  • Develop and promote sustainability engagement activities through tools, education, and training to increase awareness among leaders, staff members, and patients

  • Build effective partnerships with external organizations to support sustainability efforts where needed

  • Create and strengthen partnerships with the procurement organization to develop and implement new strategies for effective and efficient means of keeping items in use and/or providing equipment, services, and supplies that reduce FMEs environmental footprint

  • Manage data collection for owned initiatives and participate in internal and external reporting requirements

  • Contribute to content development and educational materials related to sustainability initiatives in collaboration with marketing, communications, and public relations as needed

  • Coordinate Earth Week engagement and educational activities

  • Collaborate with key stakeholders to provide education about sustainability efforts

  • Develop regular written updates on sustainability progress for key stakeholders

  • Establish best practices and develop sharing channels.

EDUCATION:

Master’s degree in sustainability, environmental sciences, or a related field (or has equivalent experience)

EXPERIENCE AND REQUIRED SKILLS:

  • 5 years of healthcare sustainability experience (required), or 10+ years of experience (preferred)

  • Experience in health care sustainability (required)

  • Outstanding communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills

  • Has experience in developing and presenting sustainable business concepts, employee training, and awareness of emerging technologies

  • Knowledge of emerging sustainable business strategies, ROI analysis, risk analysis, and other key sustainability tools and techniques

  • The ability to analyze data, evaluate outcomes, and recommend actions

  • Organizational skills, time management skills, self-motivation, project management experience, and priority setting skills

  • Experience in change management and continuous improvement

  • Understands cost-benefit analysis in the selection of sustainable business strategies

  • Knowledge of financial planning, including budget development

  • Understands environmental health and safety guidelines, the green guidelines for health care, and basic environmental compliance for health care

  • Ability to construct and direct a network of sustainable business resources

  • Knowledge of waste and inefficiencies common to the health care setting, primarily in the supply chain
