What we want

The Veterinary Technician I, under supervision, assists in the treatment of animals admitted to the Veterinary Medical Park under the supervision of a professional staff member or Veterinary Technician II or higher. Provides assistance to the professional staff and helps to maintain a sanitary and functionally well-organized service within the Veterinary Medical Park.

What you need to know

Compensation will be commensurate to selected hire’s experience.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Associate's degree in veterinary technology, biomedical science, animal science or a related area, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others. Basic computer skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 2 years of experience handling large animals in a veterinary setting

  • Certified vet Assistant

  • Certification as LVT

  • Working knowledge of veterinary equipment used within a veterinary teaching hospital

  • Large handling and restraint

  • Ability to identify unhealthy animals.

  • Knowledge of Biosafety Level 2 Procedures.

  • Knowledge of Anesthetic Equipment, Monitoring Equipment, Microscope, Refractometer, Micro hematocrit Centrifuge, and other laboratory equipment.

  • Ability to collect blood, administer vaccines and medications, and restrain animals.

  • Computer Skills in Excel and Word.

Responsibilities:

  • ANIMAL CARE : Under the supervision of a professional staff member or higher-ranking veterinary technician, may assist in administering medications, maintaining complete and accurate medical records, collecting, preparing, and submitting clinical pathology samples, and capturing fees for materials and services. Assists in technical procedures in animal surgery and post-operative care. Cleans surgery rooms, and preps rooms and recovery stalls for surgical procedures. Sterilizes surgical instruments. Operates technical equipment such as anesthetic machine, ventilator, autoclave, and cattle chute. Collects blood samples from cattle, sheep, goats, and horses. Assists in vaccination and de-worming of resident animals.

  • MAINTENANCE OF ANIMAL CARE FACILITIES : Assists in providing clinical support to faculty veterinarians in the delivery and instruction of primary care, diagnostic services, community practice medicine, and zoonotic disease control. Assists in screening of newly arrived animals. Observes animals for disease and symptoms of abnormalities. Performs sanitation of barns and other materials. Prepares pens and barns for incoming animals. Travels to feed stores for supplies. Assists investigators with experimental procedures.

  • ANESTHESIA DUTIES : Assists professional staff to perform critical and intensive nursing care or life sustaining emergency care as needed. Assists in placing IV catheters, intubating animals, setting up anesthesia, and monitoring equipment. Monitors animals under anesthesia.

  • BIO-SAFETY : Maintains a clean, sanitary, and functionally organized Bioscience Facility. Assists, as necessary, in research trials. Performs other duties as assigned.
