Job Description:Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:

The College of Veterinary Medicine’s Department of Veterinary Diagnostic and Production Animal Medicine (VDPAM) at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa invites nominations and applications for a full-time tenure track or clinical term faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, Professor, or Clinical Assistant, Clinical Associate or Clinical Professor in diagnostic pathology in our Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory.

The Iowa State University Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (ISU VDL) is an AAVLD-accredited, full-service laboratory that serves veterinarians and animal owners of the state of Iowa and across the United States. The caseload is diverse with swine representing the majority of submissions. The primary responsibility of this position will be to provide diagnostic pathology support and deliver comprehensive diagnostic case information in a concise and well-organized manner to practicing veterinarians and other animal health professionals. The ability to interact, communicate and collaborate with progressive practicing veterinarians and other stakeholders in animal agriculture is essential.

The person in this position may also have the opportunity to establish a collaborative applied research program in areas such as infectious disease epidemiology, diagnosis, pathogenesis and control. The successful applicant will also be expected to aid in the development and implementation of new diagnostic procedures and assist in maintaining quality assurance programs. The position will also have the opportunity to teach veterinary students in both classroom and laboratory settings and mentor graduate students.

Required Minimum Qualifications:

  • DVM or equivalent degree

  • At least two years of advanced anatomic pathology training, including histopathology training after receiving a DVM (or equivalent degree).

In addition to the requirements above, below are minimum qualifications at the following ranks:

CLINICAL ASSISTANT PROFESSOR: Listed above

CLINCAL ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR: A minimum of 5 years of experience in diagnostic pathology.

CLINICAL PROFESSOR: A minimum of 10 years of experience in diagnostic pathology.

ASSISTANT PROFESSOR: Evidence of experience documenting scholarship in the practice of diagnostic medicine or conducting research or other scholarly activity related to diagnostic medicine.

ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR: An established record of experience and documentation of scholarship and impact in diagnostic pathology.

PROFESSOR: A record of scholarship in diagnostic pathology with national recognition of expertise.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • MS or PhD or equivalent degree in Veterinary Pathology, Veterinary Microbiology, Population Sciences in Animal Health, or other related veterinary fields.

  • Working knowledge and experience with production animal medicine.

  • Demonstrated working experience coordinating cases in a veterinary diagnostic laboratory.

  • Demonstrated ability to instruct veterinary students and/or veterinary pathology residents and other trainees.

  • Certification or eligibility for the certifying examination in Anatomic Pathology from the American College of Veterinary Pathologists, European College of Veterinary Pathologists, or Japanese College of Veterinary Pathologists.

Department/Program & College Description:

VDPAM was created in 1997 to strategically grow the resources and emphasis in production animal medicine at the ISU College of Veterinary Medicine. VDPAM consists of approximately 55 faculty and 200 staff. Many of our faculty and staff serve food animal agriculture through service units in the Lloyd Veterinary Medical Center’s Food Animal and Camelid Hospital, the Veterinary Field Services unit and the ISU VDL. The ISU VDL provides quality diagnostic services including necropsy, bacteriology, serology, histopathology, virology, parasitology, molecular diagnostics, next-generation sequencing, epidemiology and toxicology as well as other analytical services. The pathology section of the ISU VDL utilizes state of the art instrumentation including routine digital slide scanning for diagnostic cases, fluorescent and chromogenic in situ hybridization, RNAscope, and digital image analysis.
