Supervisory Biologist - Eastern Biology Department
POWER Engineers’ Environmental Division is seeking an experienced biologist to take on a supervisory role within the Eastern Biology Department. The successful candidate will support the department both technically and through management of personnel. The position reports to our Foxborough, Massachusetts office, offering a hybrid workstyle, a combination of office and home.
Position Overviews
The Supervisory Biologist position involves two primary responsibilities:
Technical Expertise: The candidate will possess strong ecological technical skills, with a proven track record in successfully permitted projects within the energy, utility, or water resources markets.
Leadership: The candidate will manage and mentor a group of biologists, environmental specialists, and inspectors, contributing to both technical and organizational development within the department.
Key Responsibilities
Project Management: Oversee full-scale infrastructure projects focusing on natural resources studies and federal, state, and local permitting in the Northeast. This includes environmental scoping, budgeting, and developing successful survey and permitting strategies.
Field Work: Manage, train, and mentor teams who complete wetland delineations, ecological field assessments, compliance monitoring, and related reporting and permitting.
Team Supervision: Approve timecards and expenses, set goals and objectives, perform reviews, complete quality control reviews, and assist in workload distribution.
Departmental Support: Aid the Department Manager in executing the annual business plan and participate in process improvement initiatives.
Required Education and Experience
Consulting Experience: Demonstrated experience in environmental/biological consulting in the utility or energy industry with projects in transmission, renewables, power generation, natural gas, or water resources.
Technical Knowledge: Familiarity with the 1987 Corps of Engineers Wetland Delineations Manual, regional supplements, and the Massachusetts Handbook for Delineation of Bordering Vegetated Wetlands.
Regulatory Understanding: In-depth knowledge of Clean Water Act Section 404/401 permitting, Endangered Species Act regulations, and state-specific regulations such as the Massachusetts Wetland Protection Act and Rhode Island Freshwater Wetland rules.
Management Skills: 5+ years of experience in managing staff, projecting workloads, scheduling, and fostering individual career development.
Analytical Skills: Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and commitment to quality.
Communication Skills: Excellent written and oral communication abilities.
Educational Background: B.S. and/or M.S. in Biology, Ecology, or a related field.
Travel Requirements: Willingness and ability to travel throughout the region and potentially throughout the U.S., with up to 15% travel expected.
