GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The Wyoming State Geological Survey (WSGS) is seeking a talented and enthusiastic communicator to join our team as a Public Information Officer & Outreach Coordinator. In this role, you will be the agency's point person for all public communications, playing a vital role in educating and engaging the public about Wyoming's remarkable geology.

As the Public Information Officer & Outreach Coordinator, you will wear many hats. You will serve as a media liaison, crafting press releases and managing media inquiries. You will be the editor and publisher of all WSGS publications, ensuring clear and informative communication. Additionally, you will oversee the agency's website and social media presence, keeping the public informed about the latest geological discoveries and initiatives. Lastly, you will plan and manage outreach events, bringing the wonders of Wyoming geology to communities across the state.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function which may be performed at the job level.

  • Serve as the first point of contact for media inquiries and the general public, and coordinate interviews with appropriate staff.

  • Oversee the entire publication process, including editing, layout, publication, post-project coordination, and distribution.

  • Craft compelling news releases, newsletters, and social media posts to keep the public informed about the WSGS's important work.

  • Lead the Website Team, ensuring our online presence is informative and engaging.

  • Develop and lead engaging outreach programs to educate the public about Wyoming's geological wonders.

Qualifications

PREFERENCES:

A Bachelor’s degree in journalism, public relations, or a closely related field, is preferred. Preference will be given to those candidates with direct and current experience working with the geology or natural resources of the Rocky Mountain region, and experience designing and maintaining websites.

KNOWLEDGE:

  • Social Media Platforms and Website Content: Proficiency in social media management and content creation for popular platforms and WSGS website.

  • Layout/Design software: Expertise with publishing software.

  • Public Outreach: Experience in planning and coordinating science teaching/learning events

  • Communication skills: Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Wyoming geology: Familiarity with Wyoming's geology and/or natural resources (preferred)

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

Bachelor's Degree (typically in Multi-Media Design)

Experience:

1-2 years of progressive work experience (typically in Multi-Media Design) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Senior Multi-Media Design Specialist

OR

Education & Experience Substitution:

4-6 years of progressive work experience (typically in Multi-Media Design) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Senior Multi-Media Design Specialist

PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Typically, the employee may sit comfortably to perform the work; however, there may be some walking, standing, bending, carrying light items

  • Some travel is required
