Job Description

The Extension Adjunct Instructor I is responsible for providing training for the municipal extension program - Region 5 in the state of Texas. Provides instruction and coordinates classes, conferences, and area schools. Provides National Fire Academy hand-off and field delivery courses and provides training for annual schools and/or other special schools or courses as directed. This is a telecommuter position, and the instructor must reside within the 19 county service areas in the Abilene/West Central Texas Council of Governments (WCTCOG) area within TEEX Region 5. This position reports to the Training Coordinator.

Required Qualifications:

  • Associate’s degree from an accredited college or university or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Five years of experience in Emergency Services, I.E. Fire/Rescue/Haz-Mat, EMS, Emergency Management, or Law Enforcement. (*Will allow 7 years’ experience with a high school diploma or GED in lieu of degree)

  • One year of experience in adult education and/or training.

Required Licenses/Certifications:

  • Must have a valid motor vehicle operator’s license or ability to obtain within 30 days of employment.

  • Certified Instructor with Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP) or State Firefighter’s and Fire Marshal’s Association (SFFMA), or Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE), or Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS), Texas Division of Emergency Management (TDEM), or equivalent.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Degree in fire science or related field.

  • Certified Basic Firefighter with TCFP, or Certified Firefighter II with SFFMA.

  • Ten years Emergency Services experience, I.E. Fire/Rescue/Haz-Mat, EMS, Law Enforcement.

  • Five years of supervisory experience.

  • Five years adult education and/or training experience in emergency services.

Physical Requirements:

  • Physical conditioning consistent with skills required to perform hands on training evolutions.

  • Must be physically able to wear PPE and move heavy objects/training equipment.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Specific knowledge consistent with teaching Emergency Services courses.

  • Ability to effectively communicate in a classroom setting and/or hands-on training activities.

  • Specific knowledge consistent with the ability to conduct Emergency Services courses.

  • Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing.

  • Ability to positively and professionally interact with clients and staff.

  • Knowledge of basic office software and instructional programs.

  • Knowledge of principles and methods for teaching and instructing individuals and groups.

  • Knowledge of media production, communication, and dissemination techniques and methods.

Equipment:

  • Standard office equipment: computer, keyboard, multifunctional printer, telephone.

  • Standard motor vehicle equivalent to the classification allowed by the driver’s license.

Notifications:

  • This position may require work beyond normal office hours and/or work on weekends.

  • This position requires compliance with state and federal laws/codes and Texas A&M University System/TEEX regulations and procedures.

  • All tasks and job responsibilities must be performed safely without injury to self or others in compliance with System and Agency safety requirements.

  • Ability to travel independently to other and/or remote locations by driving a personal or TEEX vehicle and/or flying on commercial airlines.

  • This is a wage position established to accommodate a temporary organizational need. As such, TEEX does not guarantee any set number of hours or length of employment in this role. This position should average one to two course deliveries a month.

  • This position is eligible for telecommuting and requires completing work remotely.

  • This position primarily supports the instructional needs for the Extension Program – Region 5 and must reside in the region. For the Wichita Falls Area posting, (due to the size of Region 5) it is preferred that you live in one of the following Texas counties: Archer, Baylor, Clay, Cottle, Foard, Hardeman, Jack, Montague, Wichita, Wilbarger, and Young. For the Abilene Area posting, (due to the size of Region 5) it is preferred that you live in one of the following Texas counties: Brown, Callahan, Coleman, Comanche, Eastland, Fisher, Haskell, Jones, Kent, King, Knox, Mitchell, Nolan, Runnels, Scurry, Shackelford, Stephens, Stonewall, Taylor, and Throckmorton.

Essential Duties, Tasks, and Percentages:

Instruction and Class Management - 80%

  • Instructs assigned courses.

  • Determines course goals and objectives.

  • Uses a variety of techniques for presenting course material.

  • Develops instructional techniques to accommodate a variety of learning styles.

  • Initiates and maintains interactive classroom discussions.

  • Provides positive reinforcement and motivational incentives.

  • Monitors learner performance.

  • Evaluates and assesses instructional effectiveness.

Communication and Administration - 20%

  • Communicates with Regional Training Manager and customers.

  • Submits all required documentation, including but not limited to class closeouts, travel, and payroll.

  • Completes all training and work assignments on time.

Other Duties:

  • Interacts professionally and wears appropriate professional attire representing the Texas Engineering Extension Service (TEEX) in a positive manner.

  • Performs additional work duties as assigned.
