Job Summary

This program is designed to provide a Fellow with an experiential learning workplace opportunity. This is a short-term opportunity that will focus on the professional development of the Fellow. The Fellow will engage in individual and team projects. In addition, they will engage in activities to further develop their leadership skills and will actively participate in aspects of local government management to further enhance their understanding of the inner workings of the organization. The Fellow will attend networking events as appropriate. This opportunity may include rotational assignments which will allow the Fellow to spend time in a variety of positions within Divisional offices, based on need and interests. Through this program Fellows receive the opportunity to participate in a paid Fellows placement for a period not to exceed twelve months. This placement will include specific beginning and ending dates. Fellows will be assigned to a position based on the student's academic merit, recommendations, experience, and interests. Work schedules will be based on the needs of the Division. The rate of pay will be directly related to the specific placement paygrade. Student Fellows will be paid at a rate that will be 10% less than the minimum of the pay range and understand this is a temporary position not to exceed twelve months.

Essential Functions

• Engage in the Fellowship program as a learning experience.

• Complete all learning objectives and structured activities outlined in the professional development plan within established timeframes.

• Communicate with the supervisor and Human Resources throughout the Fellowship experience and complete required documentation within applicable timeframes.

• Demonstrate professional workplace behaviors including reliability, timeliness, strong communication, appropriate work attire, confidentiality, self-initiative, teamwork and appreciation.

• Ask appropriate questions for understanding work assignments and demonstrate hard work to meet deadlines and expected quality outcomes.

• Develop a presentation reflecting on the internship experience and how it has helped shape future career pursuits; present during the final week of the Fellowship.

• Provide an evaluation of the Fellowship experience.

• Assist Recycling Coordinator with School program tours and presentations.

• Assist Recycling Coordinator with coordination of planning, development, and implementation of public outreach and education of Solid & Hazardous Waste Management Division programs and activities related to solid waste collection, municipal solid waste disposal, household chemical waste, recycling drop off centers, customer service, and all recycling programs throughout the County.

• Assist Recycling Coordinator with public education presentation and tours of Solid Waste programs to civic organizations, businesses, and community groups

• Assist Recycling Coordinator attending meetings.

• Assist Recycling Coordinator researching new/innovative recycling and waste reduction procedures and programs; research existing recycling and waste reduction programs and of federal, state, and local legislation pertaining to solid waste disposal waste reduction and recycling.

• Assist with the development, creation, and facilitation of program material for the Waste Reduction & Recycling Section.

• Participate in outreach table events.

• Assist Recycling Coordinator with creating content for Solid waste division social media and digital marketing efforts.

• Tracks existing federal, state, and local legislation pertaining to solid waste disposal, Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) collection, waste reduction and recycling.

• Participates in public relations campaigns and promotional work for assigned division(s).

• Markets division programs to the community to obtain the community's support, interest, and participation.

• Operates a personal computer, telephones, copiers, and other general office equipment as necessary to complete essential functions, to include the use of desktop publishing, word processing, spreadsheet, database, or other system software.

Minimum Qualifications

Must have successfully completed a Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science or master's degree from an accredited college or university within the current academic year in an area of study directly related to the assignment such as Education, Business, Public Administration, Communications, Environmental Science or another related field.

  • Essential Employees may be required to work during an undeclared or declared emergency. The County’s Administrative Office will determine who will be required to work on an incident-by-incident basis.
