GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The Wyoming Retirement Center is seeking a qualified individual for the position of Recreational Activities Specialist. This position assists in the development of the recreational program for the facility which meets the physical, cognitive, and sensory needs of the residents. Plans and conducts activities including; recreational, leisure, social, and physical activities for residents with a variety of abilities both physically and mentally and to document resident participation and responses. Ensures the quality of life for residents of the nursing home facility by providing them with a systematic and individualized program of group and individual activities. Ensures these needs are met to the satisfaction of the regulatory agencies who survey this facility.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function which may be performed at the job level.

  • Must be able to obtain a Wyoming Certified Nursing Assistant certificate within twelve (12) months of hire.

  • Plan, schedule, and implement a program of individual and group activities designed to meet the needs of the residents and provide regular quality assurance to ascertain whether these goals are being met while constantly changing the variety and scope of the activities to meet the needs of a changing population. This includes taking residents on individual and group outings.

  • Enhance interpersonal relationships and cooperation between residents, families, staff, departments, community, and volunteers to foster a therapeutic atmosphere. Working in facility Gift Shop.

  • Assess and document performance improvement or decline of residents based on the activity perspective so as to provide a quality of life for the individual resident while communicating needed information to residents, families other members of the caregiving team to enhance their performance in the therapeutic process.

  • Develops care plans, and maintains records and documentation required by regulatory agencies and facilities. Submits care plans and assessments to the Activity Director for review. Note changes of residents to the Activity Director.

  • Attend educational in-services and programs that benefit the activity perspective.

  • Interview, and train, individual volunteers, groups, and community service individuals who volunteer in the facility in a variety of ways. Training includes educating volunteers on techniques of group interaction and one-to-one with a variety of clients and problems; documentation process; computer; communication techniques; activity policies and procedures, and equipment use.

  • Orient volunteers to building layout, introduction to residents, and tasks they will perform with them. Encourage the volunteer and resident so the experience remains meaningful to both.

  • Responsible for the safety of residents under his/her supervision. This includes cleaning and sanitizing equipment used to avoid the spread of infections.

  • Maintain CPR certification.

Qualifications

PREFERENCES/**AGENCY REQUIREMENTS:

Preference may be given to individuals with experience in recreational activities in a long-term care setting.

Preference may be given to individuals with a current Wyoming CNA certificate

**Must be able to obtain a Wyoming Certified Nursing Assistant certificate within twelve (12) months of hire.

KNOWLEDGE:

  • Knowledge of recreational therapy practice, principles, and procedures.

  • Knowledge of rules and regulations pertaining to recreation and activities in a long-term care facility/OBRA requirements.

  • Knowledge of skills necessary for interpersonal communication both professional and on a common level and listening skills.

  • Knowledge of computers especially Microsoft Office programs.

  • Knowledge of the aging process, medical problems, behavioral problems, and diseases in the elderly.

  • Knowledge of skills necessary for observation and perception.

  • Knowledge of physical abilities to be able to lift, manhandle wheelchairs, bend, twist, pull, and push up to 50 lbs.

  • Knowledge and understanding of interventions to provide activities and relate to clients being served/be aware of community resources available to residents.

  • Knowledge of policies and practices of WRC and the State of Wyoming.

  • Knowledge of skills necessary for adaptability, creativity, humor, and flexibility in working with residents and their needs.

  • Knowledge of emergencies and dangerous situations and how to physically respond to them.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

Bachelor's Degree (typically in Recreation Therapy)

Experience:

0-1 year of progressive work experience (typically in recreational therapy)

OR

Education & Experience Substitution:

3-4 years of progressive work experience (typically in recreational therapy)

Necessary Special Requirements

PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Physical ability to lift, twist, bend, pull, and push up to 50 lbs.

  • Must be able to work holidays, evenings, and/or weekends as scheduled.

NOTES:

  • FLSA: Non-exempt

  • For the health and protection of the persons, we care for annual influenza vaccination is required.

  • Employees of this facility will be expected to follow all rules and requirements established by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services regarding COVID-19.

  • A background check, including the taking of fingerprints, will be completed through the Wyoming Department of Criminal Investigation, the Department of Family Services, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation for every successful applicant.

  • Pre-employment drug testing will be conducted on safety-sensitive positions (direct patient care positions are considered safety-sensitive). Drug and alcohol testing will be conducted on any position if reasonable suspicion exists.

  • Voluntary separation of employment from the Wyoming Retirement Center within the first year after the CNA certification exam date will require the employee to reimburse all expenses to the Wyoming Retirement Center.

  • The Wyoming Department of Health is an E-Verify employer.
