Description

Recreation Specialists lead program participants in a variety of activities in an assigned program or service area, including but not limited to: recreation activities, health and fitness programs, prevention programs, special events, marketing functions, and city-wide volunteer programs. Current openings are in Fairfield community centers, sports and ballfield programs, senior services and day programs, mobile recreation programs, after school programs, and preschool programs. Recreation Specialists are important for creating community and connecting people. Recreation Specialists also work in administrative services and provide superior customer service; assisting with program registration processing, point of sale, cash handling, phone and email correspondence.

Please Note: Positions are part-time, year-round, non-benefited, and limited to working no more than 1,000 hours in a fiscal year (July 1-June 30). Candidates must be available to work a varied schedule to meet program needs, including weekdays, weekends, and holidays as needed.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Work is typically performed at an activity site, community center and/or in an outdoor environment in various types of weather; with frequent interruptions, deadlines, complaints, and peak workload periods. Position may require working nights and weekends. Incumbents may be exposed to noise, moisture, dust, vibrations, heat and cold. Basic cleaning of facilities may include exposure to cleaning agents. Work may take place and require travel in a vehicle to and from off-site indoor and outdoor locations throughout the City.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Work may include prolonged sitting and standing, as well as light to moderate lifting up to fifty (50) pounds, carrying, reaching, stooping and pulling. Work requires manual dexterity, clear (understandable) speech, visual and hearing acuity. The ability to actively participate in recreational activities (including games), and work outdoors in both heat and cold, are also required.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:

This is a flexibly staffed position. Incumbents in the entry level classification are expected to learn to lead participants in a variety of activities related to the assigned program area and to promote to the journey level after demonstrating proficiency in the knowledge skills and abilities of the journey level class.

Incumbents of the journey level classification are expected to be able to lead participants in a variety of activities related to the assigned program area with minimal direction from the senior classification. The Recreation Specialist II is distinguished from the Senior by the latter coordinating program activities while the journey level only interacts with program participants.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:

Receives general supervision from a Recreation Program Coordinator, supervisor or manager assigned to the service area. May receive instruction and guidance from a Program Specialist, Activity Specialist, or Recreation Specialist Senior. Incumbents of this class do not exercise supervision, but may provide direction to program participants.

Minimum Qualifications

Experience:

Recreation Specialist I

No prior experience is necessary.

Recreation Specialist II

A minimum of one (1) full-time year (2080 hours) experience equivalent to a Recreation Specialist I with the City of Fairfield leading and assisting with a variety of activities and programs in the recreation field.

LICENSE AND/OR CERTIFICATE:

Possession of a valid California Class C Driver's License may be required.

Examples of Duties

Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Assist with Parks and Recreation services activities including but not limited to: sports, recreation, wellness and academic programs, classes and events.

  • Responsible for monitoring program and site rules, policies and regulations.

  • Assist with distribution of site and program publicity including flyers and press releases.

  • Provide courteous and professional service to all program participants, facility users, City personnel and the public.

  • Answer questions from the public and provide information to individuals and groups regarding program offerings and coordination of services.

  • Use computer for data entry, roster printing, processing registrations.

  • Assist with ordering, maintaining, and taking inventory of program supplies.

  • Monitor behavior of program participants.

  • Conduct set up and clean-up of facility and equipment; may be charged with the opening and closing duties.

  • Operate copiers, fax, computers and other program-specific equipment.

  • Assist with miscellaneous office tasks, i.e. retrieving and distributing mail, receiving shipments, delivering items to program sites.

Knowledge & Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • A wide variety of recreation programs and activities including active and passive games, arts and crafts, dramatic arts, nature and science, and special events.

  • Modern office equipment, including computers.

Ability to:

  • Work with a wide variety of recreation programs and activities including active and passive games, arts and crafts, dramatic arts, nature and science, and special events.

  • Use equipment used in the area of specialization.

  • Assist with distribution of marketing and publicity material.

  • Work cooperatively with other departments, outside agencies, and the general public.

  • Work cooperatively in a team environment and nurture the development of staff.

  • Maintain a flexible work schedule dependent upon program requirements.

  • Possess and maintain a positive "can do" attitude.

  • Understand and follow directions.

  • Display good customer service and communication techniques.

  • Use a computer terminal to enter data.

  • Maintain accurate calculations and records.

  • Drive a vehicle safely and efficiently.

  • Lift and move heavy objects.

THE SELECTION PROCESS:

All applicants meeting the minimum qualifications are not guaranteed advancement through any subsequent phase of the examination. Depending upon the number of applications received, the examination may consist of an application screening, written and/or practical exam, oral interview, or any combination. This position requires a local records check and response to a medical questionnaire prior to appointment. A pre-employment medical exam may also be required.
