A Day in Your Life at MKS:

As an Optical Engineer/Scientist at Photon Control Inc., a subsidiary of MKS Instruments, Inc. you play a key role in the design, development and delivery of cutting-edge optical sensor solutions required for advanced semiconductor fabrication. In this role, you will report to the Director of Advanced Development.

You Will Make an Impact By:

  • Understand overall customer product requirements and how they relate to optical design

  • Lead the design and development of existing / future state optic sensing technology

  • Design, set up, calibrate, and utilize optical systems to evaluate and understand the characteristics of next generation optical sensors and sensor technology

  • Oversee system’s level performance for new optical sensing device development

  • Maintain the optical labs and equipment to ensure adequate capability to support development programs

  • Apply build-in-quality tools such as FMEA, DFX to ensure both manufacturability and reliability post release

  • Work cross-functionally with other team members to correlate optical characteristics/performance with physical and thermal characteristics to drive understanding and development of next generation temperature and position sensors

  • Develop and use optical simulations of optical sensors in conjunction with measurements on sensor systems to guide optimization of system performance and reduce cost

  • Participate in the design, construction, and calibration of automated optical characterization equipment

  • Develop and maintain test documentation, including test plans, test procedures, and test reports

  • Use statistical analysis software to analyze data and draw data-based conclusions

  • Mentor Electrical, Mechanical, and Mechatronic junior Engineers in best practices

Skills You Bring:

  • Master’s or Ph.D. degree in Optical Engineering, Engineering Physics, Applied Physics or technical equivalent with 5+ years hands-on experience in optical design, simulation and testing

  • Strong understanding of optical physics or optical engineering

  • High comfort level with setting up, troubleshooting and use of optical systems, including lasers, LEDs, spectrometers, modulators, optical fibers, optical coupling between components, optical tolerancing, etc.

  • Skilled in optic/photonic modelling using Zemax / FDTD techniques or alternatives

  • Software skills, for example Python or MATLAB as well as for equipment automation, for example using LabView, Beckhoff PLC programming, etc.

  • Knowledgeable and up to date with the latest technologies around optics

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience with optical sensing.

  • Understanding of integrated optical system designs.

    Physical Demands and Working Conditions:

  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs .

  • Perform activities such as sitting, standing, or typing for extended periods of time .

  • Dedication to safety to mitigate hazards that may include heat, cold, fumes, strong magnets, confined spaces, lasers, microwaves, and vacuum/pressure systems .

  • Flexible and willing to work in very fast-paced environment where tasks and priorities may change often.

  • Excellent time management skills and commitment to meet deadlines.

​ Compensation:

Salary Pay Range: $56,100 - $104,100 per year. This range is a reasonable expectation of pay for this position, based on a wide range of factors including qualifications, experience, education, training, operational and business needs and other considerations.
