Responsibilities:
GENERAL PURPOSE:
The Materials Chemistry Section of the Optical Materials Technologies group at the Laboratory for Laser Energetics has an opening for an undergraduate student to participate in computational chemistry modeling and design of new liquid crystal (LC) materials for high-peak-power applications using the High-Performance Computing (HPC) cluster at LLE.
The student would begin full-time work during the summer, with continuing part-time work during the academic year. The ideal candidate would be a student working towards a BS or BS/MS degree in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering that has a working knowledge of the Linux operating system and some experience with using molecular modeling software on any computing platform. The student is expected to have completed or are completing coursework at the sophomore level, including organic chemistry.
Research topic areas to be addressed include energy-state and conformational-state modeling of LC materials, Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory (TD-DFT) modeling of electronic transitions contributing to laser damage in LC materials and other physical properties (refractive index, birefringence, and dielectric properties) for applications in polarization control and beam shaping/modulation for laser applications.
Project activities include:
3-D graphical design of molecular structures and inputting data to the computing cluster (40%)
monitoring the progress of jobs in progress (10%)
evaluating results and modification of parameters to overcome problems on subsequent job submissions (30%)
compilation of results in both 3-D graphical and tabular formats.
