GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The Wyoming Office of State Lands and Investments (OSLI) is seeking a Natural Resources Technician in Cheyenne, Wyoming. OSLI manages the approximately four million acres of state trust land spread throughout Wyoming – lands held in trust by the State to produce revenue to support public education and other designated beneficiaries. The Natural Resources Technician in Cheyenne conducts compliance inspections on a variety of surface and agricultural leases, predominantly in the eastern half of the state, as well as on oil and gas and mineral leases. This position works extensively with a variety of stakeholders, including lessees, landowners, agencies, and collaborative groups, on a broad scope of land management issues. As an integral part of OSLI's Field Services team, this position helps ensure the effective management of state trust assets for current and future generations.

  • Conducts independent fieldwork or inspections according to specific assignments.

  • Works as lead worker in the field office and/or as a member of a team.

  • Evaluates land management problems, review progress, and inspect corrective action or reclamation/remediation projects, as needed.

  • Compares inspection findings to rules, regulations, or standards and reports results to a supervisor or team leader.

  • Applies set formulas, templates, or standards to technical data or information and makes recommendations based on results.

  • Resolves technical conflicts and disputes at the appropriate levels.

  • Analyzes straightforward environmental data and draws conclusions.

Qualifications

PREFERENCES/**AGENCY REQUIREMENTS:

Preference may be given to candidates that have a Bachelor's Degree in Rangeland Management or related Natural Resources field.

Preference may also be given to candidates with demonstrated effective communication and interpersonal skills.

**Agency requires that the successful candidate possess and maintain a valid driver's license.

KNOWLEDGE:

  • Knowledge of State and federal regulations, with the ability to understand and apply policies.

  • Knowledge of natural resources management.

  • Knowledge of energy development operations (oil and gas, coal, minerals, etc.).

  • Knowledge of software applications including Microsoft Office, Google Apps, and ArcGIS.

  • Skills in effective oral and written communication.

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

Associate's Degree (typically in The Sciences)

Experience:

0-2 years of progressive work experience ((typically in The Sciences)

OR

Education & Experience Substitution:

2-4 years of progressive work experience (typically in The Sciences)

Necessary Special Requirements

PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Extensive travel by vehicle in conjunction with the typical office setting.

  • Frequently traverse open/rugged/steep terrain on foot.

  • Occasionally performs arduous physical activity.

  • Occasional overnight travel.

  • Must be able to operate 4WD vehicles in remote/isolated locations.

  • Must be able to operate ATVs on rugged terrain.
