Western Carolina University Director of Fraternity & Sorority Life - #171031 in United States

Position Summary:

The primary location of this position is the main Cullowhee, NC campus. This position is exempt from the State Human Resources Act ( EHRA ).

The Director of Fraternity & Sorority Life, a key member of the Division of Student Affairs and the Dean of Students’ leadership team, is responsible for the comprehensive development, implementation, and management of the Greek life program, which includes the College Panhellenic Council ( CPC ), Interfraternity Council ( IFC ), and National Pan-Hellenic Council ( NPHC ) fraternities and sororities. This role involves working both independently and as part of a professional staff team to prepare students for success during their college years and beyond.

The Director collaborates with various campus departments to create a holistic educational experience, provides comprehensive management of the department, and develops programs to foster the growth and development of Greek life members. Additionally, the Director ensures compliance with applicable policies, regulations, and laws, and offers guidance on these matters to the Greek organizations.

Key Responsibilities:

Strategic Leadership & Resource Management:

  • Develop and implement strategic initiatives that align with the GSED mission and enhance the overall fraternity and sorority experience at WCU .

  • Foster a values-based framework that promotes customized and equitable learning opportunities for all members.

  • Oversee the department’s budget, ensuring resources are allocated effectively to support the mission and goals of GSED .

Student Leadership Development:

  • Actively engage students in leadership opportunities, encouraging their participation in fraternity and sorority governance and activities.

  • Provide guidance and support to student leaders, helping them to develop their leadership skills and achieve their personal and organizational goals.

  • Design, execute, and assess programs and initiatives that support academic success, council governance, community, inclusivity, and accountability.

Advising and Support:

  • Advise fraternity and sorority chapters on organizational management, risk reduction, and adherence to university policies and procedures.

  • Support chapter advisors and alumni in their roles, fostering strong partnerships that enhance student development.

Collaboration and Partnerships:

  • Collaborate with campus partners, including academic departments, student affairs, and community organizations, to create a cohesive support network for fraternity and sorority members.

  • Develop partnerships with national fraternity and sorority organizations to stay informed about best practices and emerging trends.

Risk Management and Policy Enforcement:

  • Develop and enforce policies and procedures related to risk management, ensuring the safety and well-being of fraternity and sorority members.

  • Respond to incidents and crises involving fraternity and sorority members, providing appropriate support and intervention.

Assessment and Evaluation:

  • Conduct regular assessments of programs and initiatives to measure their effectiveness and impact on student development.

  • Use data-driven decision-making to continuously improve fraternity and sorority life.

  • Collaborate with staff to collect and analyze data related to fraternity and sorority performance and opportunities for enhancing the fraternity & sorority experience.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for employee sponsorship.

  • Master’s degree in Higher Education Administration, Student Affairs, or a related field. Degree must be from an appropriately accredited institution.

  • Minimum 3 years of work experience with progressive leadership responsibilities in fraternity and sorority life or student affairs.

  • Knowledge of student development and leadership development principles, specifically within the context of fraternity and sorority life, as evidenced by relevant coursework or professional experience.

  • Demonstrated interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills, with examples such as previous roles or projects requiring these skills.

  • Experience working collaboratively with diverse groups, including students, staff, faculty, alumni, and community partners, supported by specific instances or roles.

  • Proficiency in assessment and evaluation methodologies, as demonstrated by relevant training or practical application in previous roles.

  • Availability to work nights and weekends as required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of Inter/National fraternity and sorority systems, policies, and procedures, as demonstrated by relevant coursework, certifications, or professional experience.

  • Experience advising or working with NPHC (National Pan-Hellenic Council) and/or multicultural Greek student letter organizations, supported by specific roles or projects.

  • Proven ability to develop and implement successful student engagement programs, evidenced by measurable outcomes or documented projects from previous positions.
