Purpose

The Senior GIS Database Specialist provides an advanced level of technical GIS (Geographic

Information Systems) and SQL database expertise, and is responsible for managing, maintaining and supporting the geospatial related applications and database systems in use at both site and regional hubs.

Primarily working and interacting with groups such as mine geology and exploration, but also expanding cross-functionally into other groups such as engineering, environmental and land that require GIS and database support.

Essential Duties

  • Comply with site safety protocols and standards.

  • Advanced level of expertise with Esri’s GIS application suite including ArcGIS desktop tools and extensions, SQL Server (ArcSDE) and ArcEnterprise (Portal and ArcGIS Server).

  • Manage and maintain the sites and regions GIS geospatial datasets. Good understanding of creating, editing, updating and publishing GIS content across all the standard geospatial vector and raster formats.

  • Support and development of Newmont’s geospatial mobile field collection systems.

  • Work with GIS team in standard upgrades of geospatial applications including testing, troubleshooting, deployments and documentation.

  • Monitoring and reporting of emerging geospatial technologies.

  • Good working knowledge of SQL Server as it relates to Mine Drilling and Surface

  • Sample databases. Ability to create, query, update and modify data for data entry, synchronization, reporting and data extraction purposes.

  • Demonstrate full competence in QAQC concepts including but not limited to: interlaboratory performance, program design, sampling and assaying methodology and CRM generation.

  • Support of the Mine Geology function in the review and analyses of monthly Reconciliation data

  • Collaborate and support primary stake holders including Mine Geology,

  • Exploration, Engineering, Operations, Environmental in support of their geospatial requirements and data management.

  • Conduct in-house geospatial training sessions and contribute to the geospatial knowledge base as required.

Training & Experience

Knowledge:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Information Systems, or Geology. Relevant work experience within the mining geospatial field will also be highly regarded.

Experience:

  • 3+ years practical experience in GIS and database management.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong computer skills including but not limited to Esri ArcGIS platform, SQL Server, SQL Server

  • Reporting Services (SSRS), and MS Office suite.

  • Some knowledge of mining based applications such as Leapfrog or Vulcan.

  • Some coding skills such as Python are a plus.

  • Competent in the analysis and evaluation of complex data sets (multivariate).

  • Demonstrated ability to identify continuous improvement opportunities.

  • A high level of interpersonal skills. Must possess effective verbal and written communication skills for presentations to external management.

  • Good time management, communication, and interpersonal skills.

  • Must be a self-starter and able to balance multiple tasks with minimal supervision.

  • Professionally bi-lingual, with demonstrated ability to read,write and converse in both Dutch and

  • English at a very high standard. Sranan Tongo language skills are desirable.

Working Conditions

  • The position is located on the Merian mine site in Suriname.

  • Merian is a remote site located in a warm, humid tropical rainforest environment.

  • Accommodation is in a camp/village environment near the workplace.

  • Position may require traveling to and/or assisting of other domestic and international sites.
