Overview

The Clinical Pharmacist is responsible for working with the Independent Health Pharmacy team, and the Pharmacy & Therapeutics (P&T) Committee to develop and refine appropriate pharmaceutical guidelines; and create, implement and maintain both existing and new Drug Formularies. This position will coordinate with other teams to ensure the proper management of benefit plans to maximize client and member expectations and satisfaction also in accordance with all regulatory requirements per line of business.

Qualifications

  • Pharm D degree required; license to practice pharmacy in New York State required.

  • Five (5) years of pharmacy experience to include knowledge of managed care pharmacy and disease state management required.

  • Familiarity with Government Pharmacy programs and formulary administration.

  • Demonstrated ability to interpret pharmaceutical and medical information and formulate recommendations for formulary decisions.

  • Strong oral and written communication skills.

  • Demonstrated ability and experience with physician interactions including leading meetings of physician advisory panels to obtain input on decisions.

  • Flexibility to regularly travel/attend clinical seminars on new therapies.

Essential Accountabilities

Formulary Development and Maintenance

  • Oversee the development and maintenance of the Independent Health Formulary by:

  • Convening appropriate Clinician Advisory Panels to provide broad perspectives into the P&T decision process.

  • Identifying new drugs, drug product changes, and other events that affect the Independent Health drug formulary and performs evaluation for the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee consideration,

  • Developing the quarterly P&T agenda with the VP Pharmacy and the P&T Chair and develops the review package with all relevant information to allow decisions to be reached.

  • Assessing and complying with commercial, state (NYS DOI/DOH) and Medicare (CMS) requirements related to formulary development and management.

  • Working with manager of Pharmacy Benefits Management (PBM) to ensure alignment of contracts and formulary activity.

  • Assisting in the development of clinical guidelines for the management of drugs on the formulary.

Pharmacy Benefit Management

  • Supports the Pharmacy Services department by:

  • Monitoring drug trend patterns and recommending management actions that will encourage cost-effective pharmacy utilization.

  • Monitoring competitor formulary and management activity and assessing potential actions.

  • Resolving drug/policy related issues with providers and responding to physician correspondence related to same.

  • Assessing new clinical guidelines and determining formulary and policy actions that may be warranted.

  • Supporting the Prior Authorization and Help Desk areas as required.

  • Submitting the drug formulary criteria to PBD for implementation into the pharmacy claims system.

  • Overseeing meetings with Pharmaceutical representatives including learning opportunities for team pharmacists.

  • Participating with teaching students and residents associated with pharmacy schools in conjunction with other clinical team pharmacists.

Utilization Management

  • Ensure quality pharmaceutical care is provided to member by:

  • Monitoring and assessing appropriate pharmaceutical utilization.

  • Developing action standards and action plans to address unnecessary variations from accepted norms.

  • Identifying potential pharmacy related therapy uses and establishing proactive methods to capture and measure the impact of these.

Quality Management

  • Represent the pharmacy in organizational quality management efforts in support of accreditation.

Hiring Compensation Range: $125,000 - $145,000 annually

Compensation may vary based on factors including but not limited to skills, education, location and experience.

In addition to base compensation, associates may be eligible for a scorecard incentive, full range of benefits and generous paid time off. The base salary range is subject to change and may be modified in the future.
