Job Description

The Assistant Chief of Police, under direction, oversees general administration for all law enforcement functions assigned to Field and Support Operations within the University Police Department. Ensures programs are in place to maximize security of people and property on campus. In the absence of the Chief, may assume overall responsibility for the operation of the department. Serves as the internal affairs supervisor.

Responsibilities:

  • Serves as a Campus Security Authority and ensures compliance with the Federal Clery Act.

  • Monitors and evaluates the efficiency and effectiveness of police service methods and procedures, and recommends appropriate service and staffing levels.

  • Responds to and resolves difficult and sensitive citizen inquires and complaints.

  • Responds to questions and information requests from the public.

  • Manages services and activities of assigned functional area.

  • Coordinates the activities of personnel in preserving order, protecting life and property, investigating crimes, and enforcing state laws.

  • Supervises assigned staff.

  • Serves as backup to the Chief of Police

  • Assists in the development of departmental goals, objectives, policies and procedures.

  • Formulates rules, procedures and standards for assigned divisions and ensures they are maintained.

  • Ensures compliance with all local, state, and federal reporting requirements.

  • Responds to requests for information from government agencies and the general public.

  • Conducts and completes special projects.

  • Assists in the preparation of department budget requests, monitoring and approval department expenditures

  • Acts as a departmental liaison with local law enforcement and public safety agencies to facilitate a positive working relationship.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field.

  • Six years as a Certified Peace Officer.

  • Experience in higher education campus law enforcement.

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Three years law enforcement supervisory experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet applications.

  • Thorough knowledge of Criminal Justice System.

  • Oral and written communication skills.

  • Leadership and management abilities.

  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.

Registrations, Certifications, and Licenses:

  • Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) certification or ability to immediately obtain TCOLE certification.

  • Law enforcement instructor certification preferred.
