The Worldwide Aviation Support Services (WASS) program, an AAR business, headquartered in Rockledge, FL, provides global, world-class expeditionary and conventional aviation solutions to the US Department of State Air Wing.

Role Description:

The Airfield Weather Specialist is responsible for monitoring, analyzing, and reporting weather conditions to ensure the safety and efficiency of airfield operations. This role involves utilizing meteorological instruments and data to provide accurate weather forecasts and updates to air traffic controllers, pilots, and airport management. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in meteorology, excellent analytical skills, and the ability to work in a dynamic environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Continuously monitor weather conditions using radar, satellite data, and other meteorological instruments.

  • Analyze weather data to identify trends, patterns, and potential hazards that could affect airfield operations.

  • Provide ground to pilot updates, observations and maintain a BDSC METRO capability for the purposes of receiving Pilot Report PIREP information directly from aircrew while airborne via VHF-UHF radio communication.

  • Prepare and issue warnings for the Weather Services office service area concerning several hazardous weather conditions, such as severe weather, high winds, dust events, winter storms, and other reportable notices.

  • Develop and disseminate accurate weather forecasts for the airfield, including short-term and long-term predictions.

  • Conduct, record, and transmit airfield Meteorological Aerodrome Report METAR observations in accordance with the World Meteorological Organizations standards utilizing current Air Force Manual 15-111 and the AN-TMQ-53.

  • Develop and disseminate Mission Execution Forecasts MEFs three times daily at the hours of 0600-1400-2200 and Terminal Area Forecasts TAFs for the Weather Services office service area.

  • Provide real-time weather updates and alerts to air traffic controllers, pilots, and airport management.

  • Produce a Daily 5-Day BDSC forecast at 0600, and produce Area Outlooks, Flight Weather Briefings, and seasonal briefings as required.

  • Serve as the primary systems operator for multiple weather and non-weather communications systems and related desktop computers.

  • Communicate weather information effectively to relevant stakeholders, including air traffic control, flight operations, and airport management.

  • Coordinate with local and national weather agencies to ensure the accuracy and reliability of weather data.

  • Maintain detailed records and retention of products produced by the Weather Services office and participate in the compilation of data for monthly reports.

  • Utilize the US Air Force Weather Web Services AFW-WEBS to input weather observations into the US Air Force Weather AFW global network and utilize available specialized products for forecast development.

  • Prepare and present regular weather reports and briefings to airport personnel.

  • Ensure all weather-related operations comply with FAA regulations and airport safety standards.

  • Participate in safety drills and emergency response activities related to adverse weather conditions.

  • Perform routine checks and maintenance on meteorological equipment to ensure accuracy and functionality.

  • Report any equipment malfunctions and coordinate repairs as necessary.

Qualifications:

Basic Qualifications :

  • High School diploma or equivalent.

  • 4 years of experience training in Atmospheric Science, or a related field.

  • Previous experience in aviation-military meteorology or a related field.

  • Certification from a recognized meteorological society e.g., American Meteorological Society.

  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Proficiency in using meteorological software and instruments.

  • Ability to work under pressure and in adverse weather conditions.

  • Ability to pass physical screening.

  • Passport with 18 months remaining.
