YOUR NEW ROLE, WHAT’S INVOLVED?

  • You’ll be supporting our varied, and fast paced, Earth & Environment Business Unit of WSP in the UK & Ireland. This Business Unit work in a wide variety of environments, undertaking many different tasks;

  • You’ll be an integral part of the continual development of Health and Safety at WSP, as we strive toward our Zero Harm goal; and,

  • Work within a tight knit and supportive Safety, Health and Wellbeing (SHW) team.

YOUR TEAM

We are looking for a full time, active, and engaged member of our SHW Team to support us during maternity absence of our team member, for an anticipated 12 months. The role will involve supporting over 1,000 people organised into three disciplines: Environment, Environmental Consents and Sustainability & Safety Advisory, that sit within the Earth and Environment Business Unit.

The disciplines contain multiple service lines, each providing specialist design and advisory services and containing a wide range of designers, engineers, consultants and technical specialists serving the built and natural environment, from ecologists, acousticians, ESG, asbestos and chemical safety and environmental impact assessors. As a design consultancy, whilst much of our work is desk based, for a large number of colleagues work happens on site, undertake high risk activities or travel to high-risk countries; all require dedicated and tailored health and safety support in discharging our projects.

The role requires the provision of focussed competent health and safety advice, with knowledge and experience. Duties include supporting the SHW Business Partner to;

  • liaise with, and support, the relevant Business Unit operational leadership;

  • monitor and report on key performance indicators (managing data, tracking and providing statistical analysis, and report compilation);

  • generating and cascading SHW communication to the Business Units;

  • deliver UK Corporate and Business Unit specific SHW objectives;

  • incident and accident investigation and managing data;

  • manage and run SHW forums;

  • create and deliver SHW elements of project bid support;

  • carry out internal SHW assurance auditing (office and site);

  • drive H&S culture and safety management system compliance;

  • develop and maintain assigned H&S policy documents and tools held in our safety management system;

  • provide analysis on specific project areas as required.

  • The role requires the successful candidate to –

  • be a passionate and vocal advocate of SHW and have the appetite to seek out and drive forward SHW initiatives, independently or as part of a team, with a goal of continually improving SHW for our colleagues;

  • follow a process of continual professional development; being aware of, and in touch with any changes to relevant UK H&S legislation, Approved Codes of Practice and industry best practice standards;

  • work as part of the wider WSP community liaising with, as appropriate, our UK colleagues, Business Unit / Discipline Stream Operational Teams, Management Services Teams, Corporate Real Estate Team, Location Directors, H&S Representatives, Project Teams, and all other key stakeholders as appropriate.

Essentials:

  • have a passion for Safety, Health and Wellbeing. We can develop competence, but we cannot develop passion;

  • are a diligent, hard-working self-starter with initiative and ability to work within a diverse team environment across the UK and develop relationships and rapport with all stakeholders, and a willingness to continually learn and develop;

  • hold a NEBOSH Construction Certificate or are willing to work towards it;

  • training / presentation skills and experience or aptitude and willingness to learn in this area;

  • strong influencing skills with the ability to interact with people at all levels in a diplomatic and persuasive manner; excellent listening and communication skills;

  • thrive in a fast-paced working environment and can deliver against challenging deadlines, either individually or as part of a team; [RF1]

  • can work with and manage, sensitive and confidential information, dealing with all stakeholders with the highest level of respect and professionalism;

  • have strong organisational skills – can effectively manage several projects concurrently, ensuring that deadlines are met; and

  • possess strong IT skills.

Desirables:

  • have experience in a Health and Safety advisory role (experience in a technical / consulting company is ideal);

  • are aware of and understand the CDM regulations;

  • have an understanding of auditing processes;

  • have competence in managing and interpreting health and safety data, identifying risk and opportunities, and being able to action opportunities where appropriate.
