Kemin Industries Senior Research Associate – Process Application in Verona, Missouri

This position will be the link between the Research & Development team, and Production driving for operational excellence, with responsibility for process and product optimization regarding Performance, Cost, Quality and Safety. This position is located on-site at our Verona, Missouri campus.

Responsibilities

  • Provide subject matter expertise to project teams and functions by offering technical guidance and scientific insight for new process development and process improvements.

  • Collaborate as a member of the R&D team with Operations to provide expertise, guidance, and recommendations on technology transfer and process scale ups

  • Participate in research leading to new product development or process improvement.

  • Plan, execute, and analyze lab scale/pilot scale experiments to evaluate new process technologies.

  • Develop process flow diagrams, batch cycle times, mass and energy balances and equipment/instrument data sheets and specifications for generating high level project cost estimate and conceptual engineering design.

  • Pro-actively propose process improvements for continuous improvement, cost-savings, standardization, and innovation

  • Develop SOPs, research protocols, experiment, and research methods with minimal supervision.

  • Maintain accurate and detailed electronic laboratory notebooks.

  • Use statistics to design experiments and analyze data

  • Generate scientific publications used for internal purposes. May be cited as an author following Kemin’s authorship guidelines.

  • Support and train operators

  • Collaborate with QC to ensure product quality and standardization

  • Complete root-cause analyses to suggest and implement process improvements

Qualifications

  • Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Food Science, or Animal Science with 3-5 years of experience OR

  • Master’s degree in a scientific or engineering field

  • Chemistry and process knowledge is required

  • Experience in R&D department and/or Process Engineering department

  • Experience with palatant, protein, or industrial food manufacturing highly desired

  • Positive, professional attitude with a passion for science

  • Scientific curiosity and innovative thinking.

  • Strong experimental design and excellent problem-solving skills.

  • Detail oriented and organized with excellent prioritizing skills

  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced multidisciplinary environment

  • Good project management skills.

  • Reliable and self-motivated.

  • Ability to interact well with others in a team environment.

  • Bench-top and analytical lab experience

  • Conflict resolution skills

  • Good written and oral communication skills, ability to present ideas effectively

  • Prepare and present research reports in multiple formats

  • Familiarity with LEAN manufacturing

  • Must have a solid understanding and adherence to the Servant Leadership philosophy.

  • Domestic travel 10-20%; international travel on occasion

  • Fluent in English
