Your Specific Responsibilities:

This position is responsible for the Childhood Obesity Program in Indian River County. Access to confidential records and computer access will be used on the need-to-know basis.Uses knowledge of quality improvement (QI) methods and processes to work with other staff to help identify opportunities for improvement and develop a culture of quality within DOH-Indian River; assists in improvement projects, as assigned.

Assists School Health Nursing Supervisor and school health staff to identify and respond to outbreaks and activities involving school age children. Participate in high-risk immunization programs and immunization outreach activities for children and adults. Responsible for providing case management, and disease specific education, to school age children and their parents. Utilizing the nursing process provides nursing assessments, counseling and referrals for students. Coordinates and participates in special health screenings as outlined in the objectives of the School Health Plan and in Program Goals.

Coordinates the development, implementation, evaluation, and reporting for the childhood obesity program. Coordinates health weight promotion, risk factor screenings, and health education programs and activities with the school district, pediatric providers, and local government entities with children’s programs. Conducts healthy weight promotion and education classes, workshops, and seminars for the target population.

Advocates healthy weight promotion and public health education through participation on planning boards and advisory councils. Coordinates the preparation and submission of promotional materials and information releases regarding healthy weight promotion and public health education for the school age population.

Performs related work as assigned/needed. Private and county vehicle use may be required.

Qualifications:

Minimum:

  • Able to do emergency duty required of the incumbent includes working in special needs or Red Cross shelters, or performing other emergency duties including, but not limited to, responses to or threats involving any disaster or threat of disaster, man-made or natural.

  • Current Florida Registered Nurse license or a multi-state from another compact state.

  • Basic Life Support certification.

  • Willing to work occasional flexible hours when needed, including some occasional evenings and weekends.

  • 1-3 years of verifiable nursing experience.

  • Valid Florida driver’s license.

  • Willing to distribute information on family planning (including emergency contraceptives)/HIV/Sexually transmitted diseases and other health related topics to pregnant and parenting adolescents and adults
