WM Sustainability Consultant, Net Zero Impact in Vancouver, British Columbia

I. Job Summary

Environmentally motivated, customer service driven individual to manage comprehensive sustainability projects. Projects involve organizational evaluations, program implementation, stakeholder engagement and training, emissions accounting and reduction strategies, setting science based decarbonization reduction targets, quantify ecosystem services, supply chain operations, material management programs, and energy and water efficient resource utilization, and social sustainability programs, among other topics. This role will help conduct assessments, generate reports indicating overall sustainability baseline, create operations and management plans, and execute programs remotely and at customer sites. Current projects focus on the professional sports and entertainment industry, but this position will evolve to work across several of industry types through developing strong new client relationships. Maintains pre-established standards for safety and environmental issues. This position is remote (up to 35% travel required) in Western Canada. Must reside in British Columbia or Alberta.

II. Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Consult with existing, new and potential golf customers to identify goals and solutions and develop implementation strategies. Engage with customers on their strategic direction for sustainability, including understanding their ambitions and context and advising on targets and potential improvement levers. Translate for customers the sustainability impacts of WM services and solutions into language and frameworks that matter to senior company leaders and investors.

  • Perform full facility and organization sustainability assessments and implement programs. Analyze assessment results and consult with client to identify, design, and implement environmental sustainability initiatives and cost saving opportunities and proposals. Prepare final reports, including environmental, social, and economic analysis, and present conclusions to the customer in a timely manner.

  • Integrate environmental justice priorities into program development.

  • Research and implement greenhouse gas emissions reduction strategies.

  • Develop and implement science-based decarbonization strategies for clients, ensuring alignment with global climate goals and best practices.

  • Support on-site program implementation at events and facilities.

  • Monitor and report on progress towards targets, adjusting strategies as necessary to meet objectives.

  • Develop and advise on implementation of strategies to enhance biodiversity and ecosystem health, including habitat restoration, species protection and sustainable land management practices.

  • Design project schedules, maintain multiple projects at the same time, meet deadlines and delivery quality deliverables. Analyze data sets, baseline data, and assessment findings to identify improvement opportunities. Prepare final reports and presentations and deliver conclusions to the customer in a manner that fits their needs and in a timely fashion.

  • Ensure compliance with client and government regulations when performing assessments, implementing programs, and managing other on-site functions.

  • Promote culture of safety by ensuring site personnel are properly trained to perform assigned duties and comply with safety, environmental, federal, state, and local regulations.

  • Propose customer solutions that are compliant with appropriate local, state and federal regulations.

  • Maintain communications and a close working relationship with key WM Market Area personnel.

  • Self-educate on current sustainability topics, issues, and trends.

  • Responsible for organizing and interpreting data.

  • May supervise non-exempt employees and sub-contractors during the event management process.

  • Other duties as assigned.

III. Qualifications

The requirements listed below are representative of the qualifications necessary to perform the job. Must live and work in Canada.

A. Education and Experience

Education: Bachelor's Degree (accredited) in Environmental Sciences, Engineering, Sustainability, Architectural Design, Community Planning, Business or related field or High School Diploma or GED (accredited) and four years of relevant experience required.

Experience:

  • 3 years of of relevant work experience in project/business management (in addition to education requirement) and Environmental or services industry experience required.

  • Experience with sustainability risk and management frameworks, sport-specific or otherwise strongly preferred.

  • Experience managing sustainability projects with event logistics support strongly preferred.

  • Experience with conducting a greenhouse gas emissions inventory and executing mitigation initiatives, organizational advisory services, and materials management strongly preferred.

  • Proven experience in setting and achieving science-based decarbonization targets for businesses preferred.

  • Strong understanding of carbon accounting methodologies and sustainability frameworks (e.g., SBTi, GHG Protocol, etc.).

  • Knowledge of relevant regulations, policies and market trends related to sustainability and climate change.

  • Knowledge of biodiversity conservation techniques, habitat management and ecological restoration

  • Experience with environmental justice and intersectional environmentalism preferred.

  • Experience managing material minimization and diversion programs, supply chain analyses, and sustainable material management planning preferred.

  • Experience working in sports venues and event operations strongly preferred.

  • Experience managing multiple customers and/or projects simultaneously preferred.

  • Experience with the development of diversity, equity, and inclusion programs preferred.

  • Experience with implementing GHG emissions reduction initiatives and researching mitigation technology preferred.

C. Other Knowledge, Skills or Abilities Required

  • Knowledge of sustainability trends

  • Computer and tech savvy – must be adaptable to new programs and systems

  • High proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite

  • Ability to travel up to 35%, typically two weeks at a time

IV. Work Environment

Combination: This job operates in a mix between an office environment and plant/field environment and routinely requires the use of standard office equipment such as computers, phones, copy machines, etc.

The expected base pay range for this position across Canada is $60,200 - $90,000. This range represents a good faith estimate for this position. The specific salary offered to a successful candidate may be influenced by a variety of factors including the candidate’s relevant experience, education, training, certifications, qualifications, and work location. In addition, this position is eligible for a 10% annual target bonus.
