Senior Compositor

This position is onsite, based in Vancouver, BC. (Some remote work may be considered). All applicants must reside in the lower Mainland of BC, Canada.

    There’s an exciting new project that we’ll be working on at Zoic.  It's a stop-motion animated feature that will be starting up in June 2024 and will continue on into the Fall of 2025. 

    For this particular show Zoic employees assigned to the project will be working within our Zoic Vancouver Studios, in the Gastown Area (close to Waterfront Station Downtown).  Coming together as a team within our studio will help create the excitement and positive work environment we want for this special project.

Summary of Position

The Sr Compositor is responsible for completing complex compositing shot work and for participating in the Look Development for select shots and sequences. This position requires a keen eye for detail, deep knowledge of what makes a convincing image, and the ability to work collaboratively and creatively in a deadline-driven environment. This position also helps identify, develop, share and document workflows, tools and best practices. 

Job Functions

  • Create comps that meet the creative vision and technical standards of the project. 

  • Develop and produce creative and convincing imagery combining stage and CG elements:  

  • Apply knowledge of photography, color theory, composition, stage/CG lighting. 

  • Apply compositing techniques that may include extractions, color grading, tracking, CG integration, grain management, deep compositing, 2D and 3D compositing and Roto/Paint.  

  • Establish and share workflows, tools, best practices to support shot production, as needed and participate in Look Development of shots and sequences, working with artists across disciplines. 

  • Collaborate and communicate effectively with colleagues across disciplines to troubleshoot and achieve the creative and technical goals of a shot. 

  • Maintain aesthetic integrity and technical standards of work with consistency and keen attention to detail. 

  • Help develop and maintain custom tools, templates, scripts and documentation. 

  • Help identify areas of industry innovation and automation. 

  • Help identify productivity improvements in collaboration with Artists across disciplines. 

  • Assist in training and development of talent, including mentoring new hires, as needed. 

    Qualifications 

  • 5+ years Digital Compositing experience, preferably on feature films. 

  • Experience in Nuke, Nuke Studio/Hiero, and Photoshop (familiarity with Silhouette, a plus). 

  • Experience developing custom Nuke toolsets (including Python3 or Nuke NDK), a plus. 

  • Experience with Linux (or other Unix) operating system. 

  • Understand VFX pipeline fundamentals, including shooting, editorial turnovers, modeling, texturing, animation, lighting, rendering, compositing, and DI. 

  • Ability to work efficiently and independently under tight deadlines in production environment. 

  • Ability to communicate effectively with diverse artistic talents within teams and one-on-one. 

  • Excellent time management, proactive approach to problem solving, and respect for deadlines. 

    Additional information

  • British Columbia Employees Pay Range: $45 - $65 (The actual base salary offered will depend on a variety of factors, including without limitation, the qualifications of the individual applicant for the position, years of relevant experience, level of education attained, certifications or other professional licenses held, and if applicable, the location of the position)

  • Candidates MUST be located in the Lower Mainland, British Columbia.  This Role requires the candidate to work onsite, within our Vancouver Studio in Gastown.

  • Zoic does not cover relocation costs.

  • Any and all remote positions require the candidate to have a reliable internet connection via ethernet and work on Pacific Standard Time.
