A Brief Summary of This Position:
The Director of Quality position is responsible for a broad range of strategic leadership and execution. This will include planning and directing Quality Control (QC), compliance and continuous improvement activities for all Valmont North American Pole Operations sites. The Director of Quality will apply their expertise knowledge in finding innovative, cost-effective means to improve quality output working with the Operations, Commercial, Engineering, and Supply Chain teams. You will lead the strategic direction and initiatives across all manufacturing sites that ensures compliance with customer requirements, engineering specifications, and applicable standards and codes while driving quality culture and discipline throughout the manufacturing processes.
This position reports into the SVP of North American Pole Operations and has 1 to 3 direct reports.
This role requires up to 60% travel domestically, and occasionally internationally, including overnight stays.
Develop and drive improvements in quality supporting production and local production quality control teams
Drive a strong Quality culture in which Quality is a competitive advantage through efficient/effective actions resulting in a customer focused team that thrives on the success of the customer both internal and external
Drive the regular review of Quality Specifications and revision to the current applicable code (AWS D1.1, AISC, etc.)
Create, implement and measure new quality metrics to drive change; monitor progress and capture best practices and successes to be used across the enterprise
Publish aligned quality metrics, measurement and monitoring of quality system effectiveness to ensure quality goals are met.
Consolidate, analyze, and report quality metrics on a regular basis to identify areas for improvement;
Utilize disciplined root cause and problem solving methodologies to identify, implement and correct/prevent actions specific to the region as well as lessons learned within the business unit.
Establish and develop strong working relationships with internal and external customer and work with cross-functional teams to accomplish common goals across all manufacturing sites
Interface with the VP of Quality Assurance (Commercial Team) in proactive development of the Quality Management System (QMS)
Participate in and conduct regularly scheduled company meetings for representation, promotion and betterment of quality processes
Participate in regular Contract Reviews
Identify and develop high potential talent within the QC discipline
Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds, although most frequent lift is up to 10 pounds
Required Qualifications of Every Candidate (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities):
Preferred Bachelors with 7+ years relevant experience or Associates Degree with 9+ years relevant experience or 11+ years of relevant experience
Minimum of 10 years manufacturing experience in a fast paced environment
Ability to collaborate effectively with internal/external customers
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
Able to focus priorities to best impact quality metrics
Significant experience in leading technical teams
Proven self-starter and self-motivator
Experienced big picture thinker with proven strategic project management skills
Multisite leadership experience
Experience in developing and implementing Quality Management systems
Global experience preferred
Experience leading Kaizen and other Lean events
Highly Qualified Candidates Will Also Possess These Qualifications
Master’s degree preferred
Six Sigma Black Belt or Lean Processes certification, lead auditor, metrics and statistics background preferred
Understanding of AWS D1.1 code and NDT Inspection Processes (VT, MT, UT) preferred
Working Environment and Physical Efforts:
Work is typically performed in a manufacturing plant environment and the incumbent needs to be able to move about the office and production environments. When working in production areas, the incumbent is required to wear all necessary Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). There is relatively constant exposure to conditions such as dust, dirt, heat, fumes, and cold as well as noise levels above 80 decibels. Many aspects of this role are physical and the incumbent has to be able to lift up to 50 lbs. The employee is regularly required to reach with hands and arms. The incumbent is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle, feel, as well as balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, talk, and hear. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
