Position Summary Information

Position Summary

This position is responsible for protecting students, faculty and staff on campus property and maintaining the security of the campus buildings, facilities, parking lots, pedestrian ways, and

grounds of the University. This is a 10-month position, working August 1st through May 31st.

Major Responsibilities

An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the following essential duties:

  • Act as a first responder to all campus emergencies, inclusive of medical and criminal, that could be potentially be hazardous and/or life threatening.

  • Uphold University policies and procedures as they relate to safety and security concerns.

  • Maintain a strong, healthy working relationship with all departments of the University.

  • Conduct routine inspection tours of Campus facilities documenting unusual safety and security concerns. This includes vehicular and foot patrols.

  • Remain observant for circumstances that could lead to loss or damage to property and equipment. This includes response to fire alarms, investigations into the alarm occurrence and verification of building evacuation.

  • Unlock and secure buildings as scheduled for events and ensure all windows and doors are secure as scheduled. This may include assisting students and staff with lockouts.

  • Observe and report hazardous conditions to management.

  • Ensure inside and outside lights are turned on/off as required and informs supervisor when any electrical or mechanical system is malfunctioning.

  • Ensure only authorized persons are admitted to the campus while on duty.

  • Become knowledgeable about the Campus in order to direct visitors and assist as necessary.

  • Monitor parking lots and direct traffic and parking as necessary

  • Uphold campus traffic regulations surrounding parking and vehicle operation, issuing citations when warranted.

  • Uphold campus policies and regulations.

  • Observe weather conditions on campus and report dangerous or unusual weather-related activity to management.

  • Complete investigations of University violations, including reviewing camera footage, interviewing witnesses, and writing incident reports.

  • Serve as a liaison for the University with local law enforcement.

  • Provide awareness education/information on an informal basis to students, faculty and staff during other duties.

  • Conduct monthly fire extinguisher inspections to ensure all are fully charged and operational.

  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Campus Safety.

Driving Responsibilities

A valid NYS Driver’s License is required. Routine operation of University Campus Safety vehicles will be required during the performance of duties.

Education & Experience Qualifications

High school diploma, with special consideration for those who hold Associate’s, Bachelor’s, and Master’s degrees. Also, the applicants must be at least 21 years of age.

Minimum Skills/Abilities

Knowledge:

  • Current policies, procedures, and strategies for public safety and security.

  • Customer and personal services.

  • Computer software used within the department to include but not limited to Microsoft Office, Excel, the Incident Reporting System (Guardian).

Skills:

  • Strong written and oral communications and relational skills.

  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with faculty, staff, students, and members of the community.

  • Composing and writing reports, forms, and memos.

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

Abilities:

  • Responsible for being on-call, working odd shifts, inclusive of weekends and holidays.

  • Must regularly stand or walk for extended periods of time.

  • Must remain accessible for phone communication.

  • Maintain a professional appearance and conduct themselves in a professional manner at all times.

  • Mentally analyze a situation, solve problems, and make decisions under pressure in area of responsibility.

  • Read and understand written instruction and communicate information and ideas in clear and concise written form.
