Position Description: The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Library seeks a forward-thinking professional to serve in the position of Cataloging and Metadata Librarian. Reporting to the Head of Acquisitions and Cataloging Services (ACS) unit, the incumbent devises, documents, and promulgates cataloging policies and best practices for the library. The Cataloging and Metadata Librarian provides leadership within the library for all cataloging policy decisions and workflow designs by collaborating with colleagues in the Library to assess ongoing and upcoming cataloging needs.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provides expertise in national cataloging standards to the Library.
  • Coordinates cataloging workflows within the unit and the Library.
  • Provides expertise in Library-wide cataloging projects.
  • Works with colleagues in the library to create and maintain internal cataloging policies and workflow documentation.
  • Conducts cataloging training for library staff in other technical and public services units as needed.
  • Contributes and updates NACO and BIBCO-level records.
  • Performs batch data cleanup works using the ILS functions and information technology tools.
  • Creates original bibliographic records in various formats following national standards.
  • Guides cataloging staff members with national and international cataloging standards.
  • Participates in and leads consortium, national, and international bibliographic initiatives, and research projects.
  • Provide leadership in ways that center equitable and inclusive practices, team-building, and mentoring skills.
  • Contributes to the national and international reputation of the library through professional research, service, and collaboration with national colleagues and organizations;
  • This position may include the potential for supervisory responsibility.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Master\'s degree in library and information science from an ALA-accredited program or equivalent.
  • Working experience in cataloging in a library technical service environment.
  • Familiarity of RDA, LC PCC Policy Statements, AACR2, Library of Congress Subject Headings, Classification systems, MARC 21 bibliographic formats, and BIBFRAME;
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a diverse community.
  • Knowledge of data management tools, such as MarcEdit or OpenRefine; Ability to work with world languages\' bibliographic information.
  • Evidence of the ability to do research, publication, and service consistent with university standards for tenure and promotion.

Preferred:

  • Experience working in an academic or research library environment.
  • Experience with ExLibris Alma and Primo, especially working with resource management and analytics.
  • Understanding of cataloging serials or special formats.
  • Knowledge of linked data principles.
  • Experience designing or updating workflow documents.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects.
  • Demonstrated initiative and proven ability to learn new technologies and adapt to developments in the profession.
