JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Penn State University Libraries seek a visionary and creative Head of Library Learning Services to lead the Library Learning Services department, which is a team based at the University Park campus, and to collaborate across the University Libraries to advance the Libraries’ teaching, learning, and information literacy initiatives. The Head of Library Learning Services directly supervises, manages, and mentors a distributed team of seven faculty members and two staff members and may also supervise and mentor graduate and undergraduate student colleagues. The Head of Library Learning Services partners with Libraries colleagues and stakeholders external to the Libraries to support the development, integration, and assessment of a unified, intentional information literacy curriculum and program at Penn State. This position reports to the Associate Dean for Learning and Engagement and is a member of the Learning and Engagement Leadership Team and the Dean’s Library Council.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the following:

· Develop and implement a vision for the Library Learning Services department. The Library Learning Services department currently focuses on developing teaching and learning expertise and experiences at Penn State University Libraries, coordinating foundational-level information literacy learning experiences at the University Park campus, coordinating programming for student engagement and outreach at the University Park campus, managing physical learning spaces at the University Park campus and virtual library learning spaces throughout the Libraries, and coordinating initiatives around open and affordable educational resources throughout the Libraries.

· Directly supervise, manage, and mentor the seven full-time faculty members, two full-time staff members, and graduate and undergraduate student colleagues in the Library Learning Services department.

· Serve as an active member of the Penn State University Libraries Instruction Leadership Team, which is responsible for creating, integrating, and assessing a robust teaching and learning program throughout the Pennsylvania State University. The scope of the Instruction Leadership Team includes the University Park campus, the World Campus, and the 20 Commonwealth Campuses. As a member of the Instruction Leadership Team, the Head of LLS will contribute to the collaborative development and implementation of a strategic vision for Penn State University Libraries’ teaching and learning program.

· Collaborate with other University Libraries departments and individuals, including Teaching and Learning with Technology, Assessment, Common Services, Global Engagement Initiatives, subject specialists, and Commonwealth Campus colleagues to encourage innovation, amplify strategic priorities, and leverage expertise across Penn State University Libraries.

· Collaborate with other Penn State departments and programs, including the Office of Undergraduate Education, Penn State Student Affairs, and the Schreyer Institute for Teaching Excellence, to integrate and align an information literacy program, student engagement initiatives, and pedagogical expertise with broader University programming and student success priorities.

Qualifications

Required:

· A Master of Library Science degree from an ALA-accredited institution (or equivalent).

· Substantial relevant experience with information literacy and instruction in an academic, special, or research library setting.

· Commitment to and experience with shared governance and faculty mentorship.

· Commitment to and experience with initiatives that advance diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility.

· Strong reputation for distinguished scholarship and professional accomplishments and strong record of service in appropriate professional or disciplinary associations as evidence of ability to meet the requirements of a tenured position at the rank of Associate Librarian or Librarian at the University Libraries, https://libraries.psu.edu/policies/ul-acg07.

Preferred:

· Demonstrated supervisory and empathetic leadership skills that build consensus and support a strong, self-sufficient team.

· Evidence of substantive leadership initiatives that advance diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility.

· Demonstrated ability to develop and implement a strategic vision and lead collaborative efforts across library units and with external partners in a broader setting (i.e., University)
