JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Department of Mechanical Engineering in the College of Engineering at the Pennsylvania State University in University Park, PA is pleased to invite applications for a tenured / tenure-track position anticipated in Mechanical Engineering at the Associate Professor level. Specific research areas of interest include experimental turbomachinery aerodynamics and heat transfer with a special expertise in instrumentation. The position will include directing and conducting research in the Steady Thermal Aero Research Turbine (START) Laboratory.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering is home to more than 60 faculty, 400 graduate students, and 1,000 undergraduate students. The faculty conduct in excess of $20M per year of funded research across a broad spectrum of traditional and emerging areas. Penn State actively encourages and provides resources for interdisciplinary research collaboration through university-level institutes primarily focused on materials, health, and energy. The Department offers separate B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degree programs in mechanical engineering including online graduate programs in mechanical engineering and in additive manufacturing and design. The Department has a dedicated faculty and staff forming a strong sense of community rooted in equity, diversity, and inclusion. Housed in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, the START Lab focuses on sustainable propulsion and power generation through innovating turbine technologies. START includes a vibrant team of faculty and staff and has the distinction of being a center of excellence for two gas turbine manufacturers and is heavily supported through numerous federal agencies. Over the next three years, the START Lab will experience major growth through the addition of a second test turbine to address future turbine technologies. Qualification for the position is a doctorate in engineering or a related field that must be completed by the start date in the position. Commensurate with the rank of Associate Professor, successful applicants will have demonstrated ability as a teacher or researcher and evidence of an established reputation in scholarly or professional achievement aligned with the discipline of aerodynamics and heat transfer in turbomachinery, specifically experimental characterization of turbine cooling and efficiency with special expertise in instrumentation for high temperature environments , and will have expressed strong interest in engineering education, as well as a commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion. The successful candidate is expected to teach courses at both undergraduate and graduate levels, to continue leading the START Lab’s international reputation through meaningful externally-funded research, and to contribute to the operation and promotion of the department, college, university, and profession through service.
