JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Laboratory of Anton Nekrutenko at the Pennsylvania State University is seeking an Assistant or Associate Research Professor. Galaxy (galaxyproject.org) is an open web-based platform for data integration and analysis. Though originally intended for genomics and life science applications, it has expanded into many areas of computational research including chem informatics, climate science, image analysis, astrophysics and many others. Galaxy's community is, and always has been, vital to the project's success.

The primary focus of the Community director is to support and promote global integration and infrastructure efforts for Galaxy, such as usegalaxy.* and the Galaxy Training Network (GTN). Specific tasks include:

  • Communicate and lead outreach and community activities with the Project leadership, including leading workshops and webinars.

  • Promote and help organize the annual Galaxy Community Conferences including communication with hosts, hiring, and interfacing with event organizers.

  • Help organize other large events such as the annual Galaxy Administrator Training, regional user and developer conferences.

  • Develop and maintain plans and SOPs for conducting nation-wide Galaxy training events that include user and developer training events across academic institutions in the US, EU, and Australia.

  • Organize regularly scheduled community events such as the monthly virtual Papercuts CollaborationFests.

  • Encourage new global integration and infrastructure efforts such as tool lookup services and community directories.

  • The central community platform for Galaxy is the Galaxy Hub (galaxyproject.org). The Community Director will oversee content and aesthetics aspects. This will include managing and promoting news releases, events, and announcing new features. The director will also work with the project engineers to collect and analyze usage metrics, publications records, and other community metrics.

  • The community director will also be responsible for setting up policies and actively managing social media presence using LinkedIn, Mastodon, and BlueSky. The director will also communicate with community members using email, Matrix, and other electronic forms.

    Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Passionate about scientific exploration and community development

  • Excellent written, spoken, and online communication skills

  • Organization and leadership for project members and community volunteers

  • Web site management, content creation, and maintenance

  • Experience with software development process and practices

  • Experienced biological researcher and/or software developer or systems administrator

  • Experienced teacher/trainer

  • Knowledge (or desire to learn) of genomics, transcriptomics, proteomic, and other related fields

  • Social media outreach experience

  • Experience with Galaxy or other data integration and analysis platforms used in scientific research

  • Experience with github or other version control systems

    This is a limited term position funded for one year from date of hire with excellent possibility of refunding.

    This position will require successful completion of standard background checks.
