Virgin Galactic Principal Engineer, RM&S in Tustin, California

Virgin Galactic is seeking a talented and motivated Reliability, Maintainability, & Serviceability (RM&S) Engineer to join our team. The ideal candidate will be able to perform the Responsibilities of the position and meet many of the Knowledge/Experience requirements. You bring your talent and experience and will have the opportunity learn from on-the-job training.

Responsibilities:

  • The Principal Engineer is responsible for technical leadership of the RM&S team. You must be an expert in at least one, and very competent in several disciplines and work products. In addition to producing high caliber work products, you will be asked to train, mentor, guide, lower-level engineers and produce technical process/guidance documents for the team.

  • Example of typical RM&S work products: Design for Reliability (DfR), Design for Maintainability (DfM), input to Trade Studies, Human Factors, Failure Reporting (FRACAS), Standard Reliability Reports, Availability/Downtime Analysis and metrics, Reliability Test and Evaluation, Mean Time to Repair/Maintenance Man-Hours (MTTR/MMH, Lifecycle/Maintenance cost, Maintenance Planning Data (MPD) and Optimization, Reliability-Centered Maintenance (RCM) / Maintenance Steering Group (MSG-3), Reliability Block Diagrams (RBD), Reliability models, Reliability Predictions, FMEA/FMECA, and other analyses that require joint contribution such as ILS, MTA, LORA, DEL/MEL, CONOPS, etc.

  • Perform engineering analysis and present within review groups of existing, new, and modified systems related to the air and space vehicles.

  • Participate in the Reliability Control Board (RCB) and provide standard reliability reports with ability to explore the data from the company databases.

  • Develop and update Inspection and Maintenance Planning Data (MPD) documents of preventive and Operational-MPD (Pre-Flight, Post-Flight, etc.) actions.

  • Participate in Verification & Validation activities for RM&S products.

  • Provides technical support to engineering, flight operations, production, maintenance management and technical personnel.

  • Perform Reliability processes including collecting data, developing metrics, producing reliability reports, and conducting trend analysis.

Educational Requirements:

  • Must have a B.S. or M.S. in a Science, Technology, Engineering, Math (STEM) discipline from an accredited university.

Knowledge/Experience:

  • Experience in a reliability, maintainability, availability, supportability, serviceability, sustainability, and testability discipline in any industry. Aerospace/Aviation is preferred.

  • Basic understanding of modern aerospace system architecture and operations.

  • Experience in developing technical documentation and release in a Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) system with workflow approvals.

  • Knowledge of industry standards and best practice analysis methods that apply to "complex systems" in an operational environment to affect reliability, maintenance, availability, and safety of the company vehicles.

  • Must be able to work with team-mates and other company departments to complete assigned projects.

  • Experience with discipline activities from concept to deploy to sustainment is a plus.

  • FAA Airframe & Powerplant (A&P), Pilot rating or equivalent is a plus.

  • Experience developing and conducting maintainability/reliability Testing is a plus.

  • Experience with industry software and databases is a plus.

Professional Requirements:

  • 15+ years as RM&S type engineer in aerospace or related industry experience. The number of years of experience in non-related industry disciplines will count differently.

  • Applicants must be U.S. persons as defined by the U.S. Department of State.

The annual U.S. base salary range for this full-time position is $163,100.00–$261,050.00. The base pay actually offered will vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, location, and experience and take into account internal equity. Other forms of pay (e.g., bonus or long term incentive) may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and other benefits, dependent on the position offered.
