LeoStella Staff/Principal Structural Analysis Engineer in Tukwila, Washington

Staff/Principal Structural Analysis Engineer

LeoStella is a state-of-the-art small satellite design and manufacturing company based in the Seattle area. At LeoStella, we are redefining how high-quality satellite constellations are built at scale. Our focus is on developing and using intelligent and agile engineering and manufacturing processes to accelerate the development and production of small-sat constellations, all while lowering costs and increasing on-orbit capabilities.

The work we do at LeoStella is helping organizations and markets change the world by removing the barriers to building satellite constellations. This is an opportunity to join a collaborative, high performing team focused on changing the paradigm in satellite development and production!

Position Description:

This position is ideal if you love to be adored by coworkers for your ability to prove through math and science that our satellite systems will mechanically survive after being strapped onto a rocket and fired into space. You will build finite element models of space hardware including electromechanical devices, deployed and stowed appendages, and fully integrated satellites. You will use these models to evaluate environments and structural performance to determine flightworthiness of full satellite designs down through component levels of assembly. You will be active in the test process, including generation of test procedures, conducting pre-test analysis, determining instrumentation locations, conducting testing, reducing test data, and performing post-test model correlation.  You will work closely with satellite operators and launch service providers to ensure design compatibility with launch loads and generate and submit verification artifacts.

You will do all this while collaborating within a fast-paced, highly skilled technical team focused on producing state of the art satellites. This includes responsibility and authority to define and refine structural analysis tools, processes, and approaches in alignment with company needs and objectives.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Lead significant-scale structural analysis efforts with a large degree of cross functional organization, such as the full program-lifecycle analysis and verification of an integrated satellite and/or the test planning, development, and execution of the same.

  • Define and improve key LeoStella processes applied to structural analysis and test.

  • Work closely with LeoStella program management and other Responsible Engineers to collect analysis input, communicate results, and establish and manage the program structural analysis plan.

  • Develop and maintain component, subassembly, and satellite level finite element models (FEMs)

  • Perform and document finite element analysis results for modal, stress, and vibration analysis

  • Document design, analysis, and test results in technical reports and presentations

  • Iterate within a multi-disciplinary team to optimize designs

  • Create and execute structural test plans and procedures for vibration, shock, and static loads

  • Develop and maintain structural analysis software tools

  • Seek out new technologies, tools, and approaches to maintain LeoStella’s position as a leader in efficient space system engineering

  • Creatively address unique and varying launch load conditions for many combinations of launch environments and payload assemblies

    Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science (or greater) degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a similar engineering discipline.

  • 8+ years of professional experience performing structural analysis on spacecraft or launch vehicle structures and components

  • Ability to set up and perform structural analysis on satellite components, satellite systems, launch vehicle adapters, and other complex integrated assemblies

  • Demonstrated successful experience performing static, modal, and vibration analyses to generate predictions for forces, stresses, deflections, and vibration responses

  • Strong sense of engineering judgement in order to make decisions when all required data may not be available

  • Proficiency with NASTRAN analysis software

  • Proficiency with Femap/Patran pre-/post-processors

    Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience working in a vibration test lab including instrumentation definition and installation, test article installation, GSE design, test control software operation, etc.

  • Experience developing analysis and test results processing tools using Excel, MATLAB, and/or Python

    Compensation & Benefits:

  • Compensation range is $130K-$180K + 10% target bonus

  • Your actual level and base salary will be determined on a case-by-case basis and may vary based on the following considerations: job-related knowledge and skills, education, and experience.

  • Base salary is one part of your total rewards package - you may also be eligible for up to 10% potential bonuses. Additional employee benefits are detailed below as well.

  • Employee Benefits include:

  • Employer-paid Medical, Dental, Vision, basic and supplemental life insurance, short and long-term disability.

  • 401(k) – Matching 50% of contributions, up to 6% of base salary

  • Supplemental paid parental leave

  • Paid Time Off and Flexible Schedule: You may accrue 156 hours paid time off per year, in addition to 8 company holidays.  You may also have the choice to take Flexible Friday off every other week.

    Export Control Requirement:

Due to applicable export control laws and regulations, all candidates must be a U.S. Person (U.S. Citizen or National U.S. Permanent Resident, or lawfully admitted into the U.W. as a refugee or granted asylum) or be approved for any required export authorization from the U.S. Department of State or U.S. Department of Commerce, as applicable.
