The Computing and Information Technology Directorate works to re-imagine how digital technologies can simplify the research experience, enable data-driven insights for decision makers, and accelerate PNNL’s research missions. We are looking for a Software Engineer who can rapidly prototype well-engineered solutions that prove the art of the possible in emerging technology areas. We need someone who has a questioning attitude that is willing to try new things and push innovation across our products and capabilities for our research scientists and government sponsor missions. You will be given autonomy to build your own opportunities within the Lab and helping leadership to develop a team of technical specialists that can accelerate innovation at the lab.

Your division: Research Computing

Research Computing advances scientific discovery by providing computational tools and expertise to accelerate and demonstrate research outcomes. We support science by providing computational building blocks (e.g., HPC, Machine Learning environments, Data Management Tools etc.). In addition, we provide services, expertise, and support to researchers to optimize their use of our capabilities (e.g., Human Centered Design, UX, Software Engineering, HPC Consulting, Cloud Deployment, etc.). Lastly fostering a culture of computing through interdisciplinary collaboration, community building, and access to computational resources.

Responsibilities

In this role, you will:

  • Have the curiosity to research and learn new technologies

  • Build high-quality MVPs from UX design to API development

  • Work directly with internal customers to translate ambiguous requests into structured technical plans

  • Lead projects from conception through deployment, ensuring the delivery of high-quality technological solutions for end users

  • Make foundational technical choices for your applications

  • Work autonomously and take initiative in identifying opportunities for innovation and improvement

  • Guide and mentor junior developers, fostering their growth and encouraging a collaborative team environment

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • BS/BA and 2 years of relevant experience -OR-

  • MS/MA -OR-

  • PhD

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 1 year of experience with full stack development (databases, APIs, infrastructure-as-code) in Python, TypeScript, etc.

  • Experience with cloud platforms (Azure, AWS, GCP) and modern front-end frameworks.

  • Experience with code reviews, CI/CD, unit testing, etc.

In accordance with Homeland Security Presidential Directive 12 (HSPD-12) and Department of Energy (DOE) Order 473.1A, new employees are required to obtain and maintain a HSPD-12 Personal Identity Verification (PIV) Credential. To obtain this credential, new employees must successfully complete and pass a Federal Tier 1 background check investigation. This investigation includes a declaration of illegal drug activities, including use, supply, possession, or manufacture within the last year. This includes marijuana and cannabis derivatives, which are still considered illegal under federal law, regardless of state laws.

Mandatory Requirements

Please be aware that the Department of Energy (DOE) prohibits DOE employees and contractors from having any affiliation with the foreign government of a country DOE has identified as a “country of risk” without explicit approval by DOE and Battelle. If you are offered a position at PNNL and currently have any affiliation with the government of one of these countries, you will be required to disclose this information and recuse yourself of that affiliation or receive approval from DOE and Battelle prior to your first day of employment.
