Job Summary

A position is available in Torrington/Northern Operations for a Utility Worker, reporting to Torrington Operations Manager, and as assigned. Applicant must have a high school diploma and Connecticut driver’s license. Applicant will be responsible for performing maintenance, repairs and operation of company-owned distribution systems and services. Experience is necessary in most of the following: mechanical, customer service, supply, pumping and distribution. Applicant must be able to diagnose problems and make necessary repairs and corrections with minimal supervision. The position requires progression to CT DPH Distribution 3 certifications within 54 months from date of hire.

Principal Responsibilities

  • Plan and coordinate maintenance activities on all equipment associated with Distribution systems through SAP.

  • Ensures all activities are in compliance with company and regulatory mandated procedures, rules, regulations, and guidelines.

  • Perform service and customer appointments.

  • Must participate on standby roster; work rotating, evening, weekend shifts, and holidays.

  • Possess ability to lift 100 pounds, work in confined spaces, and drive utility truck.

  • Perform other various duties as assigned.

  • Experience with the operation of personal computers, with emphasis on (but not limited to) SAP, HachWims & Microsoft Office.

  • Strong problem solving, organizational ability, both oral and written communication skills.

Preferred Requirements

  • Incumbent must possess mechanical aptitude, organizational ability, and effective communications skills, both oral and written.

  • Educational requirements include a high school diploma or equivalent and the incumbent must hold and maintain a valid State of CT license to operate a motor vehicle. A good driving record (DMV check required).

  • Knowledge of plumbing and water utility experience are desirable.

  • Incumbent must be able to use hand tools (such as wrenches and gate/curb keys), drive, stand for prolonged periods of time, walk long distances, lift 100 pounds and work in confined spaces.

Education/Certifications

  • Requires CT Motor Vehicle License. A good driving record (DMV check required).

  • License & Certifications: Successful candidate shall obtain a CT DI Distribution Operator Certification within 24 months; then shall obtain a CT DII Distribution Operator certification within 36 months; then shall obtain a CT DIII Distribution Operator certification within 54 months. Upon receiving a DIII certification, candidate will be eligible for a pay upgrade.

Salary

  • This position is classified as a Non-Union Hourly Grade 8 position with a rate range that has a training wage of $38.69/hour.

  • Successful candidate will move through Step 1 through 8 of the range at 6-month intervals with satisfactory performance to the maximum salary.

  • Upon attainment of a Class III Distribution certification, employee will progress to Grade 9 wage range. To carry the title of Senior Utility Worker, candidate must possess required licenses.
