Job Description:
As the Senior Technical Support Specialist (Senior Tableau Server Administrator), you will lead planning, implementation, upgrades, enhancements, and operational support of the City’s Tableau Server infrastructure. The infrastructure currently consists of 7 Windows Servers grouped into 3 environments (Production, Dev/QA and Sandbox) including Tableau High Availability Cluster configurations with connectivity to on-premises databases, files, and other systems, as well as to cloud-based data sources including SharePoint, Salesforce, ServiceNow, etc. The systems are currently used by 25 business divisions and around 1,400 staff.
Reporting to a Senior Enterprise Solutions Technical Lead (SAP and Tableau Platform Operations Lead) within SAP & Technical Solution Services (STSS) unit, you will lead a small team of Tableau Administrators responsible for availability, performance, content change management, user administration, backups, recovery, state of good repair, cyber security, and other related activities. You will support project teams, power users and regular users with their questions related to Tableau connectivity to various on-premises and cloud data sources, scheduled jobs, software licensing, best practices, etc.
You will also be required to provide consulting services to project teams requiring Tableau platform implementation and sustainment services on-premises and/or in cloud environments, e.g. in AWS. Additionally, you will be responsible for contributing to and establishing standards, procedures, and guidelines related to Tableau system administration and system operations, within the corporate framework.
As part of job rotation and cross-coverage within STSS unit, you will also support some of SAP products, such as SAP Business Objects Data Services, SAP Enable Now, etc. Knowledge transfer and transitional support will be provided as required.

Major Responsibilities:
As a Senior Technical Support Specialist (Senior Tableau Server Administrator), your role encompasses a wide range of responsibilities, including:
Provides senior level support of the enterprise Tableau Server platform and software installation, upgrades, configuration, account management, security administration, capacity planning and performance tuning.
Performs Tableau software and related tools installation, configuration, maintenance and upgrades. Also, performs account management, system monitoring and security services on the Tableau systems. This includes creating City wide Tableau policies and standards and enforcing the standards relating to users’ account creation and the access permissions for the users.
Leads technical project teams comprised of members from other departments and/or sections of the division, to determine requirements, research, evaluate, develop and/or acquire, implement and provide technical support for enterprise Tableau software products to support business requirements.
Designs, architects, analyzes and implements detailed plans and recommends policies/procedures regarding Tableau platform specific requirements.
Establishes City-wide standards, procedures, and guidelines (best practices) related to Tableau system administration, system operation, high availability, and change management within the corporate framework.
Advises business users and other technical staff on identifying requirements. Research solutions, evaluate alternatives, and recommend architecture designs, policies, and procedures for data integration, data security, network infrastructure, common software required, and the final product acquisition.
Supervises, motivates, and trains assigned staff, ensuring effective teamwork, high standards of work quality and organizational performance, continuous learning, and encouragement of innovation in others. Supervises the day-to-day work output of staff and resources, including the scheduling, assigning, and reviewing of work tasks to ensure a continuing and consistent service in the sustainment of complex, critical enterprise business applications and information. Authorizes and coordinates vacation and overtime requests. Monitors and evaluates staff performance, approves salary increments, hears grievances, and recommends disciplinary action when necessary.
Prepares and/or supervises the preparation of various formal contractual documents such as Business Cases, Request For Information/Proposal/Quotation (RFI/P/Q), Statement Of Work (SOW), Memorandum Of Understanding (MOU), and Service Level Agreements (SLA) and participates in the evaluation and selection of technical solutions.
Reviews, evaluates, recommends, and comments on emerging Tableau technologies and business innovations for improving service, reducing costs, and enhancing efficiency on internal service improvement and cost efficiencies to the public. You will provide Tableau technical administration assessments and recommendations for new technology trends on the effective use, acquisition, and integration of technology by the City.
Establishes City wide standards related to the operability and high availability of Tableau platforms through the identification and resolution of service or performance problems and initiates changes to enhance problem avoidance.
Provides input into and administer assigned budget, ensuring that expenditures are controlled and maintained within approved budget limitations. You will develop, manage, and report on detailed project plans.
Key Qualifications:
Your application for the role of Senior Technical Support Specialist (Senior Tableau Server Administrator) should describe your qualifications as they relate to:
Post-secondary degree or diploma in Computer Science, or an equivalent combination of education and/or work experience.
Extensive experience as a Tableau Server Administrator, including the installation, configuration, backup/recovery, upgrades, security hardening, performance tuning, maintenance, monitoring and troubleshooting of the Tableau Server, with a strong understanding of Tableau architecture and administration. Experience with clustered Tableau Server installations is an asset.
Extensive experience with Tableau Site Administration including creation and configuration of sites, projects and user groups, content promotion, and assignment of access permissions through the groups.
Considerable experience with Tableau development with Tableau Desktop and Tableau Prep Builder tools.
Experience leading technical upgrades or other similar project activities including planning, scheduling, chairing kickoff and other project meetings, working closely with technical architects, data and software engineers, power users, testers and other technical teams, gathering test results and business signoffs, etc.
Experience using Windows Server operating system as a hosting platform for enterprise application landscapes, including PowerShell scripting to automate administrative tasks, configuring user access to a network file share, etc.
Ability to develop SQL queries against Tableau Server’s PostgreSQL repository in order to analyze and visualize Tableau Server internal configuration and activity. Experience with Python programming language is an asset.
Development and documentation skills following standards/best practices for development and administration of an enterprise platform, such as Tableau.
Demonstrated skills in using project management tools, such as Microsoft Project.
Formal Tableau training, server and/or site administration preferred.
Ability to quickly learn and apply new concepts, technologies, processes and procedures.
Strong organizational skills with ability to manage high-pressure situations while working in parallel on multiple initiatives with competing priorities, limited resources and tight timelines, and during operational incidents and outages.
Demonstrated efficiency and effectiveness in teamwork, facilitation, communications, conflict resolution, problem solving and crisis management and team leadership in projects, assignments and service engagements.
Ability to prepare, organize and present business cases, proposals, solutions and budgets or similar formal documents and statements to various audiences, including stakeholders, clients and the public.
Demonstrated ability in supervising and training staff on an ongoing and/or project basis.
Strong interpersonal skills and an aptitude to work independently and collaboratively with others in a multidisciplinary team setting.
Solid ITIL knowledge, including incident, request and change management.
