The Medical Communications Manager, Inflammatory Bowel Disease is an individual contributor who plays a crucial role in the Medical Communications capability of the organization and is an integral part of the Medical Integration Team (MIT) in their respective therapeutic area (TA). They will lead the development and execution of the localized, therapeutic area specific, cross-functional Medical Communications strategy, lead the pull through of reactive and proactive Medical Affairs content by leveraging multiple channels and ensure cross-functional impact metrics are tracked while make recommendations for strategy optimization. In addition, they will be involved in business partner TA training, content excellence and approvals and own the TA strategic oversight for content deliverables from Medical Information.

Reporting to the Director – Medical Information and Medical Communications in the department of Medical Information and Communications, the Medical Communications Manager will support the implementation of the scientific strategy, ensuring all Medical Communications are aligned with internal procedures, industry standards and regulations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support the implementation of scientific strategy through the development and maintenance of a localized cross-functional Medical Communications strategy.

  • Support planning of individual tactics by function to ensure alignment with the cross-functional strategy.

  • Collaborate cross-functionally with internal stakeholders including TA heads, Medical Directors, MSL field managers, Training, Medical Information, publications, HEOR, Clinical Development and Pharmacovigilance to identify, develop, and review scientific content for external use by Medical Affairs.

  • Maintain understanding of product knowledge and labeling, associated disease states, relevant literature, treatment guidelines, competitor information, and marketing strategies and tactics for assigned therapeutic area(s).

  • Plan and facilitate cross-functional content strategic planning and Medical Communications meetings

  • Lead the execution of content development or localization in alignment with the Medical Communications strategy.

  • Collaborate with vendors/agencies involved in content creation.

  • Manage the governance of interaction with agencies and other vendors related to content creation and management in Medical Affairs.

  • Responsible for upstream governance of content creation and the stewardship of SOPs, policies, and industry standards prior to submitting content for review.

  • Responsible for Medical content inventory management.

  • Lead the identification of relevant content created outside Canada to assist the local Cross functional medical communications strategy.

  • Act as the point of contact (POC) for content developed within the Medical Affairs team, guiding teams to relevant historical content and stakeholders for their content development needs and ensure that content developed by teams ties back to the strategy.

  • Lead the identification of relevant content created outside Canada to assist the local cross-functional Medical Communications strategy.

  • Collaborate to evaluate impact and measure engagement to assess alignment relative to the Medical Communications strategy.

  • Coordinate with Medical Excellence team to ensure cross-functional impact metrics (including content usage) are tracked.

  • Contribute to recommended Medical Communications strategy optimizations at therapeutic area level.

  • Support the pull through of communication optimization efforts across functions.

  • Coordinate L&D training for MSLs on how to best deliver content specified in the Medical Communications plan.

  • Own the TA specific strategic oversight for Medical Information deliverables (Go to Market, Medical Information Content Innovation etc.)

  • Participate, lead or represent the team on special projects as agreed with Manager.

Qualifications

Education:

  • A minimum of a Master’s degree is required; a MSc., PhD, PharmD or MD is preferred.

Experience and Skills:

Required:

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in related areas in the Pharmaceutical industry (Medical Affairs, Medical information/ communications, Clinical Operations or equivalent) and track record of collaboration in a matrix environment.

  • Must be proficient in medical content creation, medical writing and/or innovative assets development leveraging common software (Microsoft Office, PowerPoint, Adobe Pro etc.) and familiarity with other digital communication formats.

  • Strategic mindset and ability to translate Medical Affairs strategy to Communication PlansAbility to adapt data to the audience and communicate it concisely as required.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Strong planning and organizational skills: manage multiple projects concurrently.

  • Ability to promote team cooperation and a commitment to team success.

  • Ability to work effectively in matrix project team environment and influence cross-functional stakeholders.

  • Ability to build and sustain trusted relationships both internally and externally.

  • Industry knowledge (IMC and Health Canada)

Preferred:

  • Medical Communications experience

  • MSL or equivalent experience in medical/clinical therapeutic area

Other:

  • Bilingualism in French and English is an asset.

  • 5-10% domestic and/or international travel is required.
