Job Summary:

The Coordinator, Engagement and Special Projects (Indigenous) will be responsible for developing and coordinating Indigenous engagement strategies, communication plans, and community engagement activities in support of division initiatives.

The Coordinator will make an important contribution to engagement with First Nations, Inuit, and Métis communities by supporting the establishment and continuity of strong relationships, and by providing advice and guidance to project teams and senior management.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Preparing and implementing engagement strategies, key messages, and communication plans to meet divisional strategic objectives and engaging a broad range of individuals and communities.

  • Assessing the Division's community engagement requirements and providing advice to the Division.

  • Designing and managing community engagement processes, including engaging First Nation, Inuit, and Métis communities, Black communities, people of colour, and other communities, and assisting staff leads working on a variety of issue and area-based initiatives.

  • Coordinating and facilitating in-person and virtual engagement meetings and events.

  • Developing material and content for community engagement, including use of web-based platforms, social media, and other unique/creative methods of engagement.

  • Manages internal and external engagement activities on significant divisional issues and planning matters in collaboration with strategic teams.

  • Assesses the Division's strategic communication requirements and provides advice to the Chief Planner and Executive Director and senior management team.

  • Prepares and implements communication plans to meet divisional strategic objectives.

  • Develops and coordinates engagement material for use by divisional staff in local communities.

  • Developing partnerships and maintaining excellent working relationships with other divisions, media, external client groups, community groups, and members of Council regarding engagement initiatives.

  • Undertakes special projects on behalf of the Chief Planner & Executive Director in response to emerging issues.

  • Prepares Requests for Proposals, Requests for Quotes, and other procurement documents to engage consultants, including managing project budget.

  • Evaluates, adjusts and introduces innovative engagement strategies to manage new and emerging corporate initiatives.

  • Represents the Chief Planner & Executive Director and the division on corporate and divisional workgroups and committees and with other agencies and partners.

  • Conducts research into assigned area ensuring that such research takes into account developments within the engagement and urban planning fields, corporate policies and practices, legislation and initiatives by other levels of government.

Key Qualifications:

  1. Lived experience as a member of a First Nation, Inuit, or Métis community.

  2. Post-secondary education in a discipline pertinent to the job function (e.g. communications, marketing, social science, political science, urban planning, urban studies, environmental studies, public administration, or public policy) combined with relevant training and experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  3. Extensive experience in designing and managing public engagement including engaging First Nation, Inuit, and Métis communities, as well as communities and groups that are equity-deserving to build consensus and practices for community engagement on planning matters.

  4. Considerable experience in leading, coordinating, and managing complex assignments to successful completion, including preparation of work plans or deliverables while balancing interests.

  5. Highly developed written and communications skills, including public speaking with the ability to interpret complex information to a variety of audiences.

  6. Ability to use critical judgement and analytical thinking in preparation of work plans or deliverables, research, and facilitation.

  7. Demonstrated sensitivity towards and understanding of the diversity of knowledge, temperament, languages, literacy levels, cultures and ethno-racial backgrounds in communities throughout Toronto.

  8. Ability to provide work direction to staff, consultants or volunteers.

  9. Strong customer service and conflict resolution skills with a proven track record of developing effective working relationships with a wide range of staff and external interested parties.

  10. Ability to work cooperatively and effectively with others in an interdisciplinary team to establish and maintain effective relationships.

  11. Proficient in the use of computerized office systems including, MS Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).

  12. Knowledge of the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA), the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) and other regulations/legislation that apply to the job duties.
