ProMedica Health System MLT/MLS/Medical Laboratory Scientist III - Bio Chemical Pathology - Full Time - Days in Toledo, Ohio

Up to a $10,000 sign on bonus depending on level of experience with up to a 1 year commitment. Sign on bonus is eligible to external candidates and internal per diem candidates that have been employed with ProMedica for less than 6 months.

ProMedica Toledo Hospital is one of the largest acute-care facilities in the region. Performs routine and complex analytical procedures, recognizes deviations and provides interpretation following established standards and practices. Serves as a resource with advance technical knowledge and skills.

ACCOUNTABILITIES 1. Performs testing a. Maintains established hospital and departmental policies and procedures. Complies with requirements of accreditation and regulatory agencies. b. Process biological specimens for analysis. Evaluate and solves problems related to specimen collection and processing. c. Performs routine and complex analytical procedures, recognizes deviations, and provides interpretation. d. Operates instruments and performs procedures within the scope of training. 2. Maintenance a. Performs scheduled maintenance procedures. b. Recognizes equipment malfunctions and acts according to established protocols. c. Tech III - Identifies, monitors and diagnoses instrument malfunctions. Directs maintenance protocols. 3. Quality Control a. Performs, records, and maintains accurate quality control records. Recognizes out of control results and takes appropriate actions. b. If qualify as Technical Consultant (TC) and/or Technical Supervisor (TS), may establish quality control limits, reviews performance and recommends course of action to resolve issues in specialty area. 4. Knowledge Resource a. Answers inquiries regarding results and factors affecting results. Acts as a liaison and fosters effective communication between laboratory and health care team, maintaining patient confidentiality. b. Tech III - Answers inquiries regarding results, methodology, test specificity, sensitivity and special factors that can influence test results. May participate in a lab focus group. 5. Computer System a. Performs routine inquiry and data input on the laboratory computer systems. b. Ensures accuracy of information in the computer systems and is responsible for corrective actions. c. Utilizes computer software to enhance specialty area. 6. Training/Competency Assessment a. Instructs new associates and students as required. b. With respect to experience and education, assesses competencies of other test performers. c. Tech III - Participates in the development of the competency assessment tool. 7. Continuing Education a. Must complete required number of CE units b. Must complete mandatory in-services c. Maintains and upgrades personal professional development. 8. Team Leader a. Provides guidance to co-workers in the absence of an on-site Supervisor regarding staffing and technical issues that arise. b. Tech III - Acts as a role model c. Performs in leadership role in the laboratory by supporting laboratory management and promoting the mission, vision and values of ProMedica to co-workers. Promotes good customer service practices. Is proactive in bringing patient, employee and environmental issues to the attention of laboratory management. 9. Other duties as assigned.

Education: Doctoral, Master’s or Bachelor’s degree in a chemical, physical, biological or clinical laboratory science or medical technology from an accredited institution or transcripts showing 60 semester hours from an accredited institution indicating 24 semester hours of medical technology courses or 24 semester hours of science courses that include 6 semester hours in chemistry, 6 semester hours of biology, and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology, or medical technology in any combination OR meet an alternate qualification route for Testing Personnel for High Complexity Testing as detailed in §493.1489 Years of Experience: 2 years of clinical experience Certification: American Society of Pathology (ASCP) MLS or Categorical

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS Years of Experience: 4 years of clinical experience in specialty area to qualify as a Technical Supervisor as detailed in §493.1449.

WORKING CONDITIONS Personal Protective Equipment: Lab Coat, Gloves, Protective Eyewear, as required. Physical Demands: Must be able to move continuously about hospital and between workstations; and prolonged periods of standing. Must be able to tolerate exposure to disease bearing specimens, odorous chemicals, carcinogens, mutagens, low-level radiation, electrical hazards, and flammable liquids. Must be able to differentiate colors. Must be able to move, lift or carry materials weighing up to 50 lbs., 5% of the time. May have to stand continuously for the entire shift. Must be able to input and retrieve information from computer.
